Here I am sieving a bucket of clay I dug from my childhood village West Hoathly, which I use as a raw material for some of my glazes.
Ideally a ball mill would speed up this process drastically as it breaks down clay and rocks into a fine slip which passes through the sieve very easily. This clay has quite a lot of stones mixed in but slaking and sieving manually like this means I am unable to break them down which is a shame as I think they would add some interest to my glazes, I’ve had some nice opalescent blues using this clay in the past.
A trick to processing clay like this is to mix in lots of water, making it a runny consistency so that it doesn’t take so long to sieve. I will now leave it to dry out completely and weigh it dry to use in glazes as and when I need it. There’s plenty to keep me going for a while!
