🎵🌍 Introducing Tunes in June!
We’re excited to launch Tunes in June - an international research study exploring how outdoor music-making can benefit people in elder care settings.

Led by Dr Stuart Wood MBE, Visiting Research Fellow at Bath Spa University, the project brings residents, families, and carers together to enjoy shared music-making sessions using Percussion Play instruments.

Find out more about the project and register your interest to receive the research when it’s published later this year: www.percussionplay.com/sounding-out

A small town with a big vision for inclusion, music, and community. 🎶

Martinsville-on-the-Move, a volunteer-led group in Illinois, has transformed The Woodlands into a welcoming space where people of all ages and abilities can come together to play, connect, and make music.

Alongside play equipment and fitness features, the group wanted to ensure the park included activities everyone could enjoy, including those with disabilities or mobility challenges. Outdoor musical instruments became the perfect solution, creating an inclusive experience that encourages creativity, connection, and fun for all.

The project also serves as a beautiful memorial to Bob Hills, a passionate music educator and supporter of the arts within the community.

🎶 Inclusive musical play for all ages and abilities
🎶 A meaningful tribute through music
🎶 Encouraging outdoor learning and creativity
🎶 Bringing the community together

The new instruments, including the Capella Outdoor Xylophone, Alto Quartet Ensemble, Music Book, and Talk Tubes are already becoming a favourite feature for local families, visitors, and schools.

“We are delighted by the response from the community to our new instruments in the park,” says Brenda Littlejohn from Martinsville-on-the-Move.

A small children's museum in Santa Fe is a great example of how they have made the most of its outside space by creating a series of 'soundscapes' designed to encourage intergenerational play and learning.

One of our best-selling outdoor musical instruments is our Rainbow Cavatina. The Rainbow Cavatina is a colorful diatonic xylophone ideal for players of all ages and abilities. Its anodized rainbow notes are arranged in a traditional left‑to‑right xylophone layout - from low to high - making it instantly intuitive for beginners while still offering expressive musicality for more experienced players.

Assigned to the Percussion Play rainbow scale, the brightly colored notes correspond directly with our Music Books, allowing players to follow color‑matched notation and quickly learn familiar tunes. This feature makes the Rainbow Cavatina especially popular in schools, sensory gardens, inclusive parks, and community play spaces.

Today we’re celebrating Outdoor Classroom Day 🌿📚

At Percussion Play, we believe some of the best learning happens outside where children can explore, create, and connect through play 🎶

Taking learning outdoors can:
🎶 Boost creativity and curiosity
🎶 Support physical activity and wellbeing
🎶 Encourage collaboration and communication
🎶 Make learning more engaging and memorable

We recently worked closely with Tanque Verde Elementary School in Tucson, Arizona, to help create a vibrant outdoor Music Garden to learn and play in.

After receiving a grant from 'A for Arizona,' a nonprofit group in the state, the school used the funds to create an outdoor space for students to enjoy playing music. The outdoor musical instruments were ordered and included Rainbow Sambas, Handpipes, Harmony Flowers, Quintet Ensemble, Akadinda, Cherub, and Tubular Bells. The school encourages teachers to take their classes outside for instruction in the Music Garden, and the instruments are also available for students to use during morning and lunch recess.

We'd love to hear about your experiences in outdoor classrooms. How do they differ from learning inside?

💜 Williams Syndrome Awareness Day - May 20th 💜
Williams syndrome is a rare genetic condition, and awareness remains limited beyond those directly affected. Increasing understanding is essential to supporting individuals and families, and to encouraging the research and funding needed to address the many unanswered questions.
May is officially Williams Syndrome Awareness Month, but awareness matters every day of the year.

This cause is especially meaningful to us. A long-standing and valued member of our team has a son, Finn, who has Williams syndrome. Finn has exceptional rhythm, a huge smile, and is a curious, drum‑crazy, happy boy. His natural connection to music shines through, and we’re proud that he has featured in several of our product videos, most recently with the Toadstool.

Finn beautifully represents the power of music to foster joy, confidence and connection. Today, we stand with the Williams syndrome community and encourage others to learn more, support awareness efforts, and help create more inclusive, musically rich spaces for all.
