Victoria (1837-1901), silver Proof Crown, 1847, ‘Young Head’ coinage (1838-1887), ‘gothic’ type, edge UNDECIMO. Obv. Young ‘Gothic’ head facing left. Rev. Crowned cruciform shields, garter star in centre, emblems in angles, date in legend in Roman numerals.
Featured in our upcoming eBay live sale the 1847 Gothic Crown is celebrated as one of the most beautiful and sought after pieces in numismatic. Its rich and intricate design was the work of William Wyon, and the reverse design influence by William Dyce. The coin was initially produced as a collector’s proof and in limited quantities, it is now an extremely in demand coin, commanding substantial value at auction. This piece reflects the fascination at the time with the gothic architecture and design and also acted as a pre-curser for the later gothic florin.
