We're very excited to announce an evening talk with the author of The Eights, Joanna Miller! We’re big fans of The Eights and have sold many copies of the hardback so we were delighted to be asked to take part in the promotional tour for the paperback! The event will take place at Haslemere Museum (which seems appropriate given the book’s subject!) and Joanna will be interviewed by Emily. Joanna will also be signing copies of The Eights.

If you're enthusiastic about historical fiction or looking for your next favourite novel (or already read The Eights and loved it like us!), this is a must-attend event.

And just like that World Book Day is over for another year. This week alone we have given out over 600 free books!
Sue and Cathy have visited four local primary schools to give out books and do special assemblies!
World Book Day is funded by us and the publishers - we order the books at our own expense and don’t get refunded for the vouchers.
But we’re so glad to do it! For us WBD is getting books into the hands of children!
1 in 4 children receiving free school meals said their WBD book was the first book they owned Your support throughout the year means that we can fund this important initiative, so thank you!

Good things in the bookshop this week!
2&3) After a slow start we managed to absolutely smash our target for the Haslemere Food Bank Gift Appeal. Thanks to our incredibly generous customers we were able to provide over 300 £10 vouchers so that every child whose family uses the food bank will be able to choose a book!
4) And they're already being spent!
5) Our pay-it-forward is being appreciated, with one person returning to donate after using it earlier in the summer!
6) At least five customers chose to donate their loyalty points, so that's £50 heading to local schools to be spent on books!
7) We heard from our friends that they had a very successful stall at the Haslemere Charities Fair. We were happy to be able to donate 3 boxes of books for them to sell!

Give the gift of reading this Christmas!

In previous years, thanks to the support of the The Haslemere Bookshop and their customers, we have managed to give every child whose family attends the Haslemere Food Bank gift drive a £10 book token. We would love to be able to do the same again this year, but I have to admit, we're a long way off from having sufficient donations to be able to do so.

If you would like to support this initiative and help give every child an opportunity to choose their own book this Christmas, it is super easy to donate. Just head to https://haslemerebookshop.co.uk/products/donate-a-book-to-haslemere-food-banks-gift-appeal and you can donate £5, £10, £15, £20 or £30.

Thank you so much for your support.

Happy birthday to Cathy! We're such big fans of you that some of us have even started dressing like you (Ian, same coat different colour & Sue, same dress different pattern!) We think you're great! ❤️

Last year we were blown away by the support from our customers! Here's the link to donate a bookshop token this year: https://haslemerebookshop.co.uk/products/donate-a-book-to-haslemere-food-banks-gift-appeal

Today, the Haslemere Food Bank launch their Christmas Gift Drive. We are asking for the support of the local community to donate new and unwanted gifts for children, teens and adults. Gifts must be brand new and unused but gifts for all ages from toys to toiletries, from games to books and from clothing to cuddly toys are welcome. Alternatively, customers at participating stores in Haslemere can make a monetary donation. The Food Bank will then use this to buy gifts for local families.

Participating retailers include Past & Present Haslemere, Oliver's
The Haslemere Bookshop Sass & Spirit, The Sports Locker, R Miles & Son and Rock'n shards and Hemingways of Haslemere

If you have anything brand new in your cupboards that you no longer want, then gifts can also be left at the
Swan Inn Haslemere and at Tesco who will store them on our behalf until needed.

Thank you in advance for your support.

Happy Bookshop Day! It’s not a big party for us this year (2024 we went all out!) but instead an acknowledgment of the little moments, from shared connections “I loved that book too!”, to Saturday morning visits for sticker books and afternoons spent lost in the secondhand rooms. Lingering book club meetings, sharing recommendations and using fiction to make sense of the world. Remembering our customers names and what they like to read, and quite often the names of their dogs too! Seeing children move through the age ranges, 24 years of bookselling means that the children Sue once recommended stories to now bring their own babies into the shop! Poems for funerals and recommendations for books to be read in hospital waiting rooms, we get to be a witness to the best and worst times in our customers' lives. Our team have laughed together and cried together (sometimes within the same ten minutes), they feel like family (and some of them actually are!) It’s easy to romanticise bookselling, so it’s also important to acknowledge the challenges we face in this time of rising business rates and AI recommendations, but we are very lucky to be so well supported by our community and today we are simply grateful and happy to be your independent bookshop.
