* * * GROUNDS FOR A GOOD READ * * *
Coming to the BERMONDSEY VINTAGE FLEA hosted by Go East Vintage over the weekend ? Looking for a last minute Father's Day present ? Maybe these will help.
Without doubt one of the classic sporting books of the 1980's is "The Football Grounds of Great Britain" by Simon Inglis (who we had the pleasure of meeting at The QPR History Day in March 2025). Initially appearing as The Football Grounds of England & Wales in 1983, it was expanded and updated in 1987 to include Scotland. Of course, by that time, changes were brewing. The fire at Bradford and the accident at Brussels in 1985 meant that changes in outdated stadia up and down the country had to be made. If clubs hadn't got the message that major modifications to grounds were needed by this point, then a certain afternoon April 1989 put the tin lid on it.
Forty years on, the 1987 edition of the book therefore serves as an immaculate timepiece of a much changed picture of Britain's football grounds. Indeed there are dozens which have been totally replaced, while practically all the remaining ones have changed beyond all recognition.
The book was updated with a brand new edition in 1996 as changes were beginning to take effect, but it's the copy from the late 1980's which remains the classic version. This could make the ideal Father's Day present for a football father who can recall going to many of the long disappeared or much changed grounds which appear in the book. We have a number of "good used" copies (they're paperbook, so there is some unavoidable light wear) priced at £12 each (or available with UK P&P at £15).
And there's something a little closer to home as far as we are concerned. Crossing the border out of North West Middlesex and venturing a few miles into South West Hertfordshire, we find ourselves at Vicarage Road, the nearest Football League ground to which we are based. Watford moved there in 1922, and a magnificent "coffee table" book was produced four years ago to mark the ground's Centenary. Published with the unusual cover price of £20.22, we are pleased to offer a stock of perfect condition copies obtained directly from the club at £15 (or £20 with UK postage). It's one of these books where you don't need to be a supporter of the particularly club to appreciate it, if you have even a passing interest in the development of football stadia, then you need a copy of this in your library.
In fact, let's be honest, you really need copies of BOTH books, don't you - so why not take us up on a special offer of £25 for the pair including UK p&p ?
