A glimpse into the unknown…

This giant geode developed a small opening during transit, revealing a hidden crystal cave within.

Just a quick update that Finest Fossils will be closed for annual leave from today and will reopen on the 10th.

I’m away in Tunisia for the week, but I’ll still try to reply to messages when possible. Any online orders placed during this time will be dispatched once I’m back.

Thank you as always for all the support recently — especially with some incredible pieces finding new homes over the last few weeks. Lots of exciting new stock will be arriving soon after I’m back as well.

One of the most striking trilobites we’ve had through the shop in a long time.

This incredible “flying” Crotalocephalus trilobite has been prepared in a dramatic elevated position, giving the illusion that it’s almost suspended in motion above the matrix. The preparation work on pieces like this can take countless hours, carefully exposing each individual spine and segment without damaging the fossil itself.

Crotalocephalus trilobites lived during the Devonian Period, around 390 million years ago, when much of the world’s oceans were filled with strange armoured marine life long before the age of the dinosaurs.

Museum-quality preparation, natural sculpture, and an amazing example of prehistoric life frozen in time.

There’s always something exciting about unwrapping a new arrival for the collection.

This latest piece has just arrived to take the place of the recently sold Mosasaur jaw — an incredible Otodus vertebra and tooth plate, combining fossilised vertebrae with one of the ocean’s most iconic prehistoric sharks.

Pieces like this are exactly why no two visits to the shop are ever quite the same. New displays are constantly arriving, evolving and finding their place within the collection.

Sharks are one of the oldest surviving animal lineages on Earth, with the earliest shark ancestors appearing more than 400 million years ago during the Devonian Period.

To put that into perspective, the first true trees did not appear until roughly 350 million years ago, meaning sharks had already been evolving in Earth’s oceans for tens of millions of years before forests even existed.

Over that immense span of time, sharks have survived multiple mass extinctions, dramatic climate shifts, and the rise and fall of countless prehistoric species.

Even today, modern sharks still retain many of the same highly effective evolutionary traits that made their ancient ancestors such successful predators hundreds of millions of years ago.

It’s an incredible reminder of just how ancient and resilient life on Earth truly is.
