Material Things fabric shop opened for business over 20 years ago. Under new management since the beginning of July 2015, the business is continuing to provide the service of the past two decades while striving to add new products and ranges. We continue to sell all the standard products and will add to our range as we get to know you. Whether you are into dress-making, quilting, toy-making, embro

idery, school uniform trims or many other activities, we can help. We stock a wide range of fabrics, trimmings, ribbon, buttons, lace, backing, wadding, ‘DMC’ embroidery threads, quilting materials, toy stuffing, cushion pads and panels, pins, needles, thread, sewing boxes, ready made items, end of range and seasonal sales…you name it, the chances are we have it.

✂️ Our Creations! ✂️

This is a quillow I made using our new ‘Wizard of Oz’ fabric. I paired this with a red bumbleberry to coordinate with the smaller details in the main fabric. I also used a blue farm fabric to tie in the narrative of the original 1939 film. In using the duller fabric with the contrasting bright fabrics I hoped to display the films transition from the dull sepia beginning (Dorothy’s life in Kansas) to the technicolour dreamlike world of Oz.

I was inspired by a customer who came in to buy this Simplicity pattern, I fell in love with it and took a copy for myself!
I made the shorts version in denim, thinking it needed the least fabric so was least waste if I didn’t end up liking them… but I love them! I plan on making the 3/4 length next in our new khaki cotton/ramie linen look.

Who knew there were so many types of pins! 📍
Having the correct pin can be helpful for different uses . Whether it be with a glass head so the head doesn’t melt when ironing, or being extra long for quilting or extra short for sequins, or more decorative for putting a flower button hole on a suit!

New linen look plains in denim and khaki. The fabric is 70% Ramie and 30% Cotton. Ramie is a very interesting fabric and becoming more popular as an alternative to linen as it has similar properties with a more reasonable price tag.

Ramie is a renewable plant fibre, it is biodegradable making it sustainable compared to synthetic fabric.
The fibres are slubby which gives Ramie an appearance similar to linen. Ramie is reportedly "twice as strong" as Linen, one of the strongest natural fibres.

Advantages of Ramie:

🌱 Natural resistance to stains

🌱 Resistant to shrinkage

🌱 Withstands high water temperatures during laundering

🌱 Comfortable and breathable to wear, making it suitable for warm and humid conditions

🌱 Fully natural, sustainable & regenerative material
