College clothing wasn’t originally designed as a fashion trend. Across American campuses, clothing was used to represent your university, sports team or club. Letter sweaters, varsity jackets and eventually printed sweatshirts turned what you wore into a visible sign of belonging.

The sweatshirt played a huge role in taking that look further. Champion began making sweatshirts for athletes in the 1930s, offering something warmer and more practical than traditional training gear. Once university names and logos started appearing across them, the college sweatshirt became an instantly recognisable piece of American sportswear.
Over the following decades, collegiate clothing moved beyond campus.

By the 1980s and 90s, the combination of American sports culture, hip-hop, film and television had helped export the aesthetic around the world. Oversized university sweatshirts, varsity jackets, baseball caps and bold collegiate lettering became fashion pieces regardless of whether the person wearing them had any connection to the university.

That influence never really disappeared.
Modern brands regularly borrow the typography, crests, colour blocking and silhouettes associated with American colleges, while vintage versions have developed their own appeal. A faded university crewneck or worn varsity jacket doesn’t just recreate the collegiate aesthetic, it’s an original piece of the culture that inspired it.

From campus uniform to worldwide vintage staple, college clothing might be one of America’s most successful accidental fashion exports.

During the late 1980s, Polo Ralph Lauren began appearing across New York City, particularly in Brooklyn and the Bronx, where young people embraced the brand for its bold colours, premium quality and luxury image. At a time when high-end fashion felt out of reach for many, wearing Polo became a statement of ambition, confidence and individuality.

No group had a bigger influence than the Lo Lifes.
Formed in Brownsville, Brooklyn, the Lo Lifes were a collective obsessed with Ralph Lauren. Their name came from “Polo,” and they became known for wearing head-to-toe Ralph Lauren outfits, hunting down the rarest pieces and building collections unlike anything seen before. They didn’t just wear the brand, they created an entire culture around it.

The Lo Lifes helped transform Ralph Lauren from a label associated with country clubs and prep schools into a symbol of New York street culture. Their influence spread through neighbourhoods, onto the streets and eventually into hip-hop itself, inspiring artists and fans alike.

When Ralph Lauren launched Polo Sport in 1992, the relationship only grew stronger. Its oversized fits, technical outerwear and bold branding perfectly matched the look of the era, making it a favourite in rap videos, on stage and throughout the streets of New York.

Artists including Raekwon, Ghostface Killah, Nas, Mobb Deep and, later, Kanye West all helped cement Ralph Lauren’s place in hip-hop history. Iconic collections such as Snow Beach, Stadium, CP-93 and Polo Sport have since become some of the most sought-after vintage pieces in the world.

Today, that influence is still everywhere. Vintage Polo remains one of the most collected and respected names in streetwear, proving that some of fashion’s biggest cultural moments aren’t created by brands, they’re created by the people who wear them.

Vintage collecting isn’t just about finding rare pieces. For some, it’s become a lifelong mission to preserve fashion history.

Around the world, a small group of collectors have spent decades hunting down the rarest Levi’s, perfectly faded Carhartt jackets, original single stitch T-shirts, military garments and iconic band merch. Many of these collections contain pieces that are now impossible to find, documenting the evolution of American workwear, music culture and streetwear one garment at a time.

Collectors like Tommy Dorr have dedicated years to preserving early American workwear and denim, while Rick Moe has built one of the most respected archives of vintage band T-shirts in the world. Hikki’s unrivalled Nirvana collection has become legendary among vintage tee enthusiasts, and figures like Jeff Jebian and Bryan Shettig have helped document the history of Levi’s and Americana through decades of careful collecting and research.

What makes these collections so special isn’t just their value. Every faded print, repaired seam and worn-in fabric tells the story of the people who owned these garments before us. They’re reminders that clothing wasn’t always made to be replaced every season. It was made to be lived in, repaired and passed on.

Without collectors preserving these pieces, much of vintage fashion history would have disappeared forever. Their passion has inspired designers, educated collectors and ensured that some of the world’s most iconic garments continue to be appreciated for generations to come.
