This is so true..... its like our Gov't has walked back through a black hole to past failure.

If you don’t know this feeling, you are one of the most privileged people in the world.

Being the child who had to leave the classroom.

The one who missed art.
Missed gymnastics.
Sometimes even missed lunch.

Because you had to go somewhere else to do extra English.

At the time the adults probably called it support.

But every child in that room understood something instantly.

You were the one who had to go somewhere else.

The one who couldn’t quite keep up.

Children don’t always have the words to explain that feeling.

But they feel it.

They feel the moment they are asked to stand up and walk out of the room.

They feel the eyes following them.

They feel the quiet shift in how they begin to see themselves.

And that is why I keep thinking about one part of the proposed SEND reforms.

The idea of “Inclusion Bases.”

Because the concept itself isn’t actually new.

Education systems have tried versions of this idea for decades.

Different names over the years:

Remedial rooms.
Withdrawal groups.
Learning support units.
Special units.

Spaces where children who struggled were taken somewhere else to learn.

Now, in the new reforms, we have Inclusion Bases™.

A new name.

A new structure.

A new policy description.

But underneath it, the core idea is very familiar.

Children who struggle in the classroom are moved somewhere else.

And sometimes that is genuinely necessary.

Some children do need quieter spaces.
Specialist teaching.
A different learning environment.

But we cannot pretend that children do not understand what is happening.

Because every child understands something very quickly.

They know when they are part of the group.

And they know when they are not.

They know when they are learning alongside their peers.

And they know when they are being sent somewhere separate.

Even if they cannot explain the feeling in words.

And sometimes something else happens.

When the goalposts always feel too far away…

when the targets always feel impossible to reach…

some children stop trying.

Not because they are lazy.

But because they have quietly realised that the system is measuring them against something they cannot reach.

And when that happens, something very important fades.

Their belief that school is a place where they belong.

So my worry about Inclusion Bases is not about the room itself.

Support spaces can absolutely help some children.

My worry is about the system that surrounds them.

Because if the wider SEND system is still under pressure to manage demand, contain costs and move children who don’t fit the classroom model…

then these spaces risk becoming something very familiar.

A new name.

For a very old idea.

And children will still know exactly what it means when they are the ones asked to walk through that door.

Is your child being excluded, sent to isolation just for being themselves? There's quite a debate going on about the misuse of Isolation in schools.... if you're concerned about this issue, here's a petition you can be a part of.
