RJL Baits first opened its doors on 14th September 2016. This was no impulsive decision, having suffered from a severe and life altering disability for most of my life, I had been making my own baits for over 10 years already, which supported my passion for fishing that gave me the escape that I needed from this illness.

In the past 10 years, my disability gradually improved and I got to the stage about 6 years ago where I felt that I may be able to return to work and hold down a job, however no one wanted to employ someone with such an unpredictable illness. This led to me deciding to turn my passion into a living and I created RJL Baits. The business has been a huge success in many ways, one of which is that it has allowed me to demonstrate my ability to work full time. As anyone who has worked from home or been self-employed will know, being able to switch off and have time for yourself is damn hard work. With children that are becoming adults all too quickly, I have recognised this and have now decided that I want to have time for my family and of course, have some time to fish for myself and not just help other people to. Due to this, I decided to take on a full time job 9-5 and concentrate on what really matters.

I would like to thank all of the RJL Baits Team members that have been with us over the years and to everyone else who has helped and supported the business along the way. There are many times that I have been pleasantly reminded of the good in humanity along this journey, thank you for that πŸ™‚ I have met some incredible people (the good, the bad and the ones full of fishermen's tales...) I consider myself to be extremely fortunate in that looking back over the last few years, I am now able to close the doors to RJL Baits in the knowledge that I did something good, was successful at what I did and helped create so many memories for others. We caught a LOT of beautiful fish and Loads and Loads of New PBs for so many others and myself too 😊

I hope to see some of you in January, to the rest of you, so long and tight lines Rich πŸ™‚

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Big Well done to Team Member Steven Gregg. Who has just sent me over his last 2 catch reports from this month with one being Steven's New PB weighing in at 35lb 7oz and the Lakes Venues Biggest Fish!!

I will leave the rest to Steven and heres what he had to say...

November 1st - 5th bells mill winter Banger

After booking a little bit of contemplating what peg to book I decided to go for peg 1 due to it being a double peg and due to the fact it gave me a wider piece of water to go at, upon arrival I noticed that fish were fizzing up in about four, five different spots,
Obviously being the angler I am I wanted to drop a rod straight on them, however from what I've learnt the fish are easily spooked and I didn't want to run a risk of spooking my swim.
So I decided I would chose a completely separate spot to where I had seen them fizzing, as I sat there gazing across the lake looking for somewhere to set the traps I spotted the bubbles mid lake the airator was active I know that this would be the perfect way of spreading the scents of my bait through the whole water collom and my whole swim including the fizzing carp.
So It began unfortunately my RJL BAITS stash is running dangerously low so I had Brought some simple bread crumb from the local tackle shop and a couple pints of h**p and maggot, I then crushed around 40 boilies till they were literally powder not a grain was present, I then used the last of my nutcrunch glug from many moons ago in a bid to create a mix that would keep them coming back for morex after mixing all of these together I filled up around 15 pva bags rammed to the brim with the deadly combination, and set off on my quest for a bells mill beast,
I flicked the one rod which was equipped with a banana pop up ( RJL BAITS) and pva bag with the super mix around a rods length away from where the airator was fizzing up.
I placed the next mid lake accompanied with another jam packed solid pva bag.
I then began to hand ball some more of the mix this time into the airator in a bid to spread the scent far and wide but the rods didn't move at all unfortunately I had managed to break my alarms which were now not working and have a soaking wet bed so I was going to abort the fishing trip and leave on a blank when it finally happened, around 2.30pm I was chatting away with he owner and a couple other anglers when the red began to buzz not a screamer just a slow lift of the bobbins and a couple dings of the delk the drop back was slow, I lifted the rod gripping the spool with my forefinger and gave a little strike as I struck I new I'd made contact the rod doubled over and I was thrust into battle, the fight felt personal not irratic or spontaneous it felt planned almost asif this fish had an escape plan with deep lunges I felt my heart rate increase as the line pinged the fins of my opponent, another 10 minutes of a back and forth rug of War she rolled across the surface I instantly thought wow she looks big I felt the excitement rush over me my heart began pounding I knew it was the moment of truth sash lunged forward to scoop the almost defeated opponent but he had other ideas with a deep powerful lunge I was back in action again for another (what felt like an hour) 5-10 minute battle before she finally gave up the angry monster had finally sircome to my charm and was in the back of the net sulking in the margin,
Jon had been talking about a carp just five minutes before I hooked up stating the mirror that had gone in in May hadn't been seen since and as he looked in the net he was looking at the exact fish they were talking about all 26lb of her.
What a session it was, to have caughy this beauty in early November after the venue hadn't chucked a fish for a couple of weeks but the RJL baits doing the business even when the going is tough πŸ‘ŒπŸ»πŸ‘ŒπŸ»πŸ‘ŒπŸ»

Well what can say other than I'm know the lake record holder at bells mill fishery and this is where it all began, I had been asked by a pal of mine to do a 48hour social down at bells mill fishery which we are both winter ticket holders.
Im not very clued up on the peg choices but he was fishing in peg 4 so I decided on peg three, so the social could commence, upon arriving at the lake I had a wonder down to the peg and was happy with the pot luck peg I was situated in between the two islands and a over hanging Bushes to my right and left, the whole picture screamed fish so I began doing what I know I had already pretied pva mesh bags with RJL BAITS super mix from a previous session which was going to be my tactic of choice bags and naturals (maggots) as the rules in winter are maggots only and a maximum of two pints per day, with using the mesh bags it gave me the means if discreetly getting bait on the spot without causing to much disruption to the swim, I placed one on either point of the island just a little further off, I almost instantly began to get liners so I knew the fish were there and was just a matter of time till once stumbled up with forty minutes the delk began screaming I dived towards the rod but I reached out and it dropped dead I still lifted into it in desperation but to no prevail what ever it was had done me.
I sat there devastated, confused on what had just happened investigating the rig looking for the culprit but it looked fine I still don't understand why it dropped it but it did,
I decided it was pot luck that it slipped and decided to stick to trusting the rigs I make and threw it back out reloaded with fresh bait and pva mesh bag on the same spot but as the hours began to roll past my hopes of the spot producing began to fade, so I thought I'd introduce a bit of notice and catapulted around 5 pouch fulls of dead maggots over the top of the spot and within twenty minutes the spot had come to life once again, my pal said it had dropped quiet but when I pointed out my bait he was like deffo feeding down there, but still as the hours passed still no takes but I'd drawn fish into the spot twice I was positive they'd be back.
My buddy had also realised the possibility of a blank was on the cards but I said to him I don't know about uou but Ima bang me out a monster and laughed the blank off, before I knew it was 11 o'clock at night we decided to call it a night and head to bed, after drifting off to the land of nod I heard the alarm melting off I pounced out of bed but the alarm stopped ringing and the bobbin was bsck in reset position I looked at the time which was 2.30am I couldn't belive it I looked at the sky and thought I'll sort it tomorrow looks cold out there (πŸ™ˆπŸ™ˆπŸ™ˆ)
And off to sleep I went to then be awoken by an absolute melter tearing across the lake I flew out of bed only managing to half open the door no shoes no sense of direction I just knew it was screaming I hit into the rod and it was instant power action the 10 foot compact folded in half has he made a b line for open water, I knew it was a decent fish from the sheer power he was pulling with deep long lunges jerking the tip towards the surface of the lake the battle seemed to be more extreme in the pitch black with no head torch no shoes haha but my step daughter came to my rescue and brought my light and trainers out for me a few bone shaking minutes later she cracked the surface for the first time and oh wow the scales on her back broke the surface before lunging for the depths once more I said to sash she's a big un she is the power is furnominal I knew she was as excited as I was, she broke the surface once more this time rolling over teasing me with the depth of her belly I knew she was big but I had no idea how big I began to guide her across the cord but she must of gotten spooked and splashed away in a last minute attempt of freedom but sash has been coming fishing with me for years she knows how to handle the net and dashed a double scoop encasing the beast in the back of the net I looked down and swore I knew it was big by the width of her "I've only gone and done it saj" I said her smile said it all it was all the recognition I needed, my buddy came running round to see her sin the net I said to him Ive done it mush he asked how big I reckoned "got to be a 30 bro".
I lifted the net and new it was a chunk the excitement that filled the air was to much to describe even the neighbours had awoken to the commotion,
we dropped her on the scales which rolled straight round to 35lb 7oz I couldn't belive it a new personal best mirror for me to then find out from the owner of bells mill it was a new lake record I couldn't belive my luck the ultimate red letter session for me down at bells mill what a trip πŸ‘ŒπŸ»πŸ‘ŒπŸ»πŸ‘ŒπŸ»
What can I say even when the going is tough the RJL BAITS produce roll on the next adventure🎣🎣🎣

Managed to get out for a few hours for a couple nights this week with Team Member Kyle Rankin.

So with the rods and bait packed in the car we headed over to the river Wye.

We managed a couple 4/5hr sessions before packing up and coming home.

It didnt take long for either one of us to have a bite, some nights was a little slower. But in all a great few nights fishing.

Kyle had Barbel to 11lb 8oz and chub to just over 5lb

I managed Barbel to 10lb 8oz and chub also to just over 5lb

All fish caught using our newspice dumbells. Some the special hookbaits and Our ground baits.

Were let the photos do the talking!!

Well done to Team consultant Christian Golding who's manage to get out for a few nights this week between work. Hes certainly been putting the effort in. As you will read. And its certainly paid off for Christian, resulting in this stunning mirror and perfect looking common.

Heres what Christian had to say...

The call to support at work in different location on Thursday with 5am start at work I decided to do quick overnight session on the boat.
2 rods out for pike fishing sardines and one for the carp on Rjl new spice fished over corn.
2am comes and new bouncies of the bobbin and strike into what thought was going to be a bream to find this lovely mirror on the end of the line.
put the other rods away, quick photo and now off to work with smile.

Chris

Spent the Night on the boat after work arrived late around 9.30pm and quickly put 2 rods down my margin fishing new spice 20mm dried out boilies with new spice pop up on top, over pellets and corn. First take was around midnight with double figure bream, quickly released and then rod reset .
Around 2.45am same rod ripped off and after 15 min fight and the fish taking around 60 yards of line managed to slip the net under this pristine common of 23lb 4oz
Having success on the river and enjoying the challenge with rjl baits to support

I had the pleasure of a early morning call just before light to Rich can you come take a few photos off Team Consultant Christian Golding.

Christian was out fishing the River Avon again last night.

I will let the photos do the talking!

And heres what Christian had to say...

With couple days off at the back end of the week it was time for few days fishing off the boat.. arrived to find extra water coming down and few extra feet but nothing too major.
Decided it was slight change of plan was needed and opted to fish pop ups tonight, baited the margin to my side with tin of corn and fished a single 16mm new spice pop up at the bottom of the shelf, after few little flicks I found my hard spot was looking for.. after a bream and recasting the rod back onto the spot .. the rod melted off, the fight did not last long but as looked into the water I knew was better fish than before so quickly got it in the sling and made a phone call to see if anyone can do some photos.
Absolutely buzzing as i have invested the time fishing the same spot with the same bait and it has done me well..
25lb 2oz river avon common

Well done mate. Thanks for the phone call glad I had the pleasure of coming over and taking the photos

I managed to get for a few more hours in this week before going back to me day job tomorrow.

With the rods all ready to go, from last weekend away.

I thought it be rude to not get back down on the wye for a evening in to dark.

And once again i wasnt disappointed

For the first hour it was slow going, it was just going in to dark and I had a couple really shy bites, that come to nothing, I felt as though i was doing something wrong, and with that gutt feeling I wound in both rods tied up a couple more rigs chopped a few newspice dumbells 16mm in half, refilled the cage feeders and rods was back out!

It didnt take long before the left rod doubled over and with a fish I could feel taking me up and down stream through my right rod which thanks to me new pod I didn't have no problem working my way under the rod to carry on playing the fish.

After a good 10minute battle the fish slowly give up and as I seen the head come up through the water to take that first gasp Kyle done me the honours and slipped the net under the first barbel of the session.

Another stunning wye barbel just over 8lb falling to a half a dumbell!

Few quick photos then back in the water to recover before swimming off slowly in to depths out of sight,

Rod back out and it didnt take long before the left rod went again, straight away I said its fighting like a chub and moments later. Yeap up pops its head first chub the evening.

After a few pics and letting go the rod went straight back of and with in minutes it whacked over again in new what it was straight away Mr Chub! I will settle for that.

We stopped for another couple hours where everything just seemed to go dead. No signs life on the water surface and the rods was only tap from w**d coming down stream.

So rods packed away and back in the car, ready for the drive back knowing that was probably last chance before next weekend now.

I will be in the office a few evening this week rolling baits, after the day job. I will be open from 5-7pm monday to Friday.

I'm Not avaible weekends unless pre arranged

So after finishing the day job shot blast friday. And having a half day. I headed home and load the car up with kit and a order to deliver in person up in Kettering to one of our regular customers.

The roads was hectic to say the least and after leaving at 1.30pm I finally managed to get on to the river Trent at 8.30pm once delivery had been done.

Kyle Ranking and myself set up in the collingham stretch of the trent in peg 100.

I think if we got there in day light we might have chosen a better swim were we could set up but we just made do. After setting up and getting the rods out we both got plagued by mitten crabs all night. First light come and we decided to pull the rods in pack up and head towards Bob's island.

After a short drive we got to Bob's Island. And for the first time ever the point swim was free. So with out even looking at any other swims we got the rods and pods out. And back out went the baits.

No bites untill it got dark. And then we had a few between us. Unfortunately I ended up snapping up a couple times and losing a few fish to either snags or large rocks in the swim.

After a change in hook length material and the day light by the minute. We slowly started to pack down the brolly systems..

20minutes before pulling the rods in my left hand rod doubled over. Producing a stunning barbel and I got the pic I wanted with the castle in the back ground. Kyle ended up landing a bream and lost a couple fish through the night.

We was packed up and off site buy 7am and on the 2.30minute journey home.

Talking about the weekend and with kit still in the car I decided after getting home and taking the kids out for a few hours it be rude not to hit the wye for a few hours sunday evening seeing as we both had bait left.

Sunday evening we headed over to the wye for a few hours. We both got set up and knew it would only be a matter of time before one the rods went off.

As soon as it got dark Kyle's right rod doubled over. After a good battle I slipped the net under Kyle's fish. We got the scales out. And it tipped the scales at 10lb 4oz falling to the newspice dumbells.

Not long after my left rod doubled over and kyle returned the favour and slipped thr net under my fish weighing in at 8lb 2oz.

With getting later we both decided to call it a night as we both had early starts Monday morning back to work..

What a great weekend 2 different rivers both producing barbel. Dont come much better then that... the effort paid off and we both got rewarded for it.

05/09/2021

So after dropping Sophie Loveridge back of at uni friday. I ended up going to Telford and fishing for 48hrs with Barry Richards Marie Richards and Jamie Falconer. On a local water to them.

Fair to say none of us got much sleep and the fishing and fish was none stop from the minute the roads went out.

Nothing massive this time but was nice to get away for the weekend.

As per Usual!!!

All my fish come off Nutcrunch and Newspice
And so did everyone else a few fish on the special spicey dumbells landed by barry and Marie.

Think Jamie had the most with about 18 fish all on RJLBAITS.

Got a lot of bait to make up this week after the day job. Then up to Nottingham friday to drop 40kilo 14mm Nutcrunch of to one my regular customers. And then on to the river Trent for a few nights after the barbel.

Getting my fishing mojo back :) and about time

Another water I've never fished but producing the goods once again!!

Well Done Owen Clifford and thank you for the photos.

Fishing over a bed of our mixed halibut and krill pellets and some h**p. Baits was chopped and scaled down for day time fishing then fishing wither single or double dumbells hooked side way in to the later hours.

Fished weighed in at 10lb 1oz

And 11lb 1oz

In Owen's on words.
(Big confidence in the newspice)

Christian Golding has been out on the River Avon again and produced another stunning Carp.

Using our Newspice Freezer baits that he air dried and then soaked them in our Masla bait spray

Heres what Christian had to say!

Great night fishing on River Avon last night carp just over 17lb caught on air dried RJL new spice 20mm boilie that been soaked in some rjl masala bait enhancer for a little twist..
Also had a large slab of a bream but sadly no photos of that one..
I used simple running rig and fished over some corn and around 20 free offerings in the margin
Main tip I would give is remember the flow when feeding as depending of depth, bait good 15 to 20 foot above where your planning to fish..
Happy days
Chris
