⚔️🖤 WHY WAS IRON FEARED BY THE FAIR FOLK? 🖤⚔️
Across Ireland, Scotland, Wales and much of Northern Europe, iron was considered one of the most powerful forms of spiritual protection.
Not silver.
Not crystals.
Not herbs.
Iron.
The old stories tell us that the Good Folk, the Fair Folk, the Hidden People, whatever name you choose to use, could not tolerate cold iron.
For centuries people placed iron:
🖤 Above doorways
🖤 Beside beds
🖤 Under cradles
🖤 In pockets while travelling
🖤 Near livestock
🖤 Around the homes of newborn children
But why?
The truth is nobody really knows.
Some folklore suggests iron represented the rise of mankind and the end of older magical ages.
Others believed the act of forging iron through fire, hammer and human will infused it with a unique power unlike any naturally occurring stone or metal.
There is another theory that fascinates me.
Many old traditions viewed the world as layered.
The physical world.
The spirit world.
The realm of the fae.
The realm of the dead.
Iron was believed to anchor a person firmly within the human world, making it harder for spirits, fae or wandering energies to influence them.
This may explain why horseshoes became protective charms.
Why blacksmiths were often viewed with a mixture of respect and fear.
And why so many old Irish homes contained iron objects hidden within walls, thresholds and fireplaces.
Even today remnants of these beliefs survive.
People still hang horseshoes above doors.
Some carry iron keys for protection.
Others place iron beneath the bed when experiencing strange dreams or unsettling energies.
Whether you see these customs as folklore, symbolism or genuine spiritual protection, one thing is certain...
Our ancestors believed iron held power.
Enough power that stories about it survived for hundreds, perhaps thousands, of years.
Sometimes the oldest protections are the ones we have forgotten to ask questions about.
