Fair Game - Stag Head Sculptures

Intended as a headstone to Scotland’s historical farming communities and in remembrance of the loss of their old ways, traditions and, the decline of The Kirk, against the competing ideas of Postmodernism, Naturalism and Materialism.

As the generations have passed, we seem to be losing our relationship with the life cycles of the Scottish landscape and its fauna. FairGame tries to capture some wild essence of Scottish rural life using tangible materials more representative of modern Scotland.

Further themes are of Scotland’s shift in perspective, away from a faith rooted in divine creation and Christian traditions, towards Postmodernism and belief in the New Atheists.

The pieces are representative of those constructed visions of reality that are limited to scientific processes and physical matter. As culture turns away from intelligent divine design, to doctrines professing life’s meaningless existence within a purposeless reality.

'Cambium Charge'

Trophy Stag Antlers rendered in bike saddle and wine corks, incorporating a Brooks Cambium saddle.

The texture of this saddle reminded me of tweed and I hope it adds to the piece a feeling of rural traditions.

I was interested to learn that cambium is also the name for the cork-like structure between the main trunk of a tree and the outer bark, which is a happy coincidence.

King of the Mountains

Made from a more modern racing saddle with details evoking a stag's skull this makes a novel gift for the cycling enthusiasts among us. Or wine lovers.

I would enjoy taking a commission if a particular saddle has sentimental value or story attached.
Obviously a white saddle works best and there would be a lead time associated with any bespoke pieces.

Scottish Life Cycle (or Monarch of Glen Esk) by Bruce Currie.

The sculpture represents a tribute to Scotland’s historical hunting and farming communities and the loss of their old ways and traditions.

As the generations pass, we lose our relationship with the cycles of the Scottish landscape and fauna.

The intention is to evoke the wild essence of Scottish rural life, while representing the evolution towards a more modern Scotland.

The vintage Brooks saddle is a retro classic design and represents an era that particularly suits this theme.

“AULD PATRIARCH”
A shapely white Iscaselle Targa saddle, produced in Italy during the 1980’s, brutalised into the macabre representation of a skull.

With these compositions the saddle becomes almost disguised and much less of a feature within the artwork, nevertheless there is more realism and its proven to be popular.

“KING OF THE MOUNTAINS”
These are made from more modern racing saddles still "used" and still upcycled. These pieces are quite fun, they tend to be smaller and more stylised.

Perhaps these would make a novel gift for the cycling enthusiasts among us, and I would be happy to take a commission if a particular saddle has sentimental value for someone. Obviously a white saddle works best and there would be a lead time associated with any bespoke pieces.

MONARCHS OF GLEN ESK - VINTAGE BROOKS SADDLES
These are my favourite saddles - being collectors items in their own right - they were produced in England during the 1960's and 70's as "shoppers" for recreational cycling. Their shape and sprung construction give them an unmistakably vintage appearance of an era that particularly suits the composition. Care is taken not to modify or damage the saddle in any way and the antlers are built around them. The antlers tend to be of a grander scale, to suit the greater width of these saddles.

A note on the idea of using bike saddles for skulls - I had that original realisation and hoped that no-one else had developed this before me. However, after a quick search I discovered that in 1942 Pablo Picasso had set a bike saddle for a bull’s head.

Picasso said of his Tête de taureau, “In a pile of objects all jumbled up together, I found an old bicycle seat right next to a rusty set of handlebars. In a flash, they joined together in my head. The idea of the Bull's Head came to me before I had a chance to think. All I did was weld them together”

A bittersweet moment that; learning that my idea was not unique to me. However, I managed to console myself. I had developed this idea in my own mind's eye, never having seen a saddle in that context before and without any serendipity of a chance find.

The concept of sculpted red deer antlers is influenced from a love of the Scottish Highlands and my ancestors who lived off the land.

My great grandfather, Auld Cornie, was a shepherd who lived with his wife and 8 children in a small cottage, “Cornescorn”, remote from the village of Edzell, near Brechin. My uncles worked as gamekeepers within the local estates. As a child I enjoyed their story-telling, experiencing their lifestyle and loved their humour, rooted in humanity. The trophies of wild game that hung on their walls were symbols of their world and above all the stags' heads captured the majesty of that rural community.

I completed my first stag’s antlers sculpture, “Auld Cornie”, in June 2020. Since then I have produced three main compositions, based on the styles of saddles that I favour and what I feel works well visually:
“THE MONARCHS OF GLEN ESK” vintage Brooks saddles.
“AULD PATRIARCHS” saddles sculpted to resemble a skull.
“KINGS OF THE MOUNTAIN” - modern racing saddles

I particularly enjoy working on commissions, especially where saddles have sentimental value, or a story attached. Contact Bruce at [email protected]
