🌍♻️ Young eco entrepreneurs in action!

Over the past few months, Wimborne St Giles First School Eco Crew has been working with The Green Gram Community Refill Shop to launch a mini refill pop-up shop for families and the local community.
The children carried out market research, chose their products, created a brand, designed marketing materials and completed refill training before launching the service on 1 May. Their chosen products are Spiced Ginger Washing Up Liquid and Coconut Body Wash.
Not only does the project help reduce single-use plastic and promote environmentally friendly products, but profits from sales will also be used to fund future eco projects at the school. Headteacher Philippa Hill said ‘We are so proud of Eco Crew and Oak Class for their innovation and commitment to sustainability!’ The Green Gram has thoroughly enjoyed working with the children and will continue to support their refill journey.

What’s in your personal care products?

Many big brands use parabens and phthalates to boost fragrance and keep their products fresh. But there’s growing concern over the health effects of these, as they can interfere with our hormones.

Phthalates and parabens bioaccumulate (or build up) in our river systems. Since water treatment plants aren’t able to remove all our household chemicals, what goes down our plugholes can damage the wildlife in our river Avon too.

The good news is, by switching to products without these nasties, we can easily reduce the levels in our bodies. At The Green Gram we have a great selection of personal care products free from parabens and phthalates – and throughout June you can save 10% off marked prices on our toiletry refills!

The Green Gram Community Benefit Society is inviting grant applications from local good causes. Thanks to the success of the shop over the last year, we are excited to be able to share up to £2,000 in grant funding and we’re keen to support projects that align with our aims.

You may have heard about gut microbiomes and the importance of eating healthily to feed the good bacteria in our guts. But what do you know about skin microbiomes?

Human skin is home to trillions of bacteria, fungi and viruses that help to keep us healthy. Some of them even produce antimicrobial molecules that stop harmful species from causing infections.

So it’s really important to look after the bacteria on our skin and avoid personal care products that can damage them.

Antibacterial products can strip away the protective bacteria, leaving our skin open to attack. Plus, all those chemicals are washed down the drain and into our wastewater systems, potentially harming aquatic life.

For most people, ordinary soap and water are all that’s needed, along with a proper handwashing technique (think lockdown!).

That’s why at The Green Gram, most of our personal care products aren’t antibacterial, and the one option we do have is certified by Allergy UK, with no nasty chemicals - good for your skin and good for our rivers too!

Did you know that, as a Community Benefit Society, one of our aims is to give grants to local projects when profits allow? We're inviting grant applications from organisations for projects that support one or more of the following sustainability headlines:

- environment
- health
- local economy
- building community

Up to £2,000 in funding is available. The closing date for applications is the 30th June, with projects being shortlisted by 31st July, and decided upon by our members at our Annual Members' Meeting in September.
