Two years! 🥂

I daren’t actually light the candle — a naked flame balanced in a chocolate brownie in a holiday cottage feels like it might be tempting fate — but this is what two years of having a shop on the high street looks like… and it’s damn great!

Two years ago today I opened the door to my little shop in Fakenham for the first time. I don’t think I could have imagined then quite how much I would love having a place of my own to make, sell, chat, teach, experiment and generally fill with jewellery.

But the very best bit has been the people.

So thank you. To those of you who pop in for a chat, come back to choose another piece of jewellery, bring your friends in, book a workshop, trust me with something special, wave through the window when I’m at my bench, recommend me to someone else or simply follow along from afar. You’ve made my little shop feel like so much more than four walls and a front door.

And a particularly big thank you to Charlotte, who is holding the fort this week while the three of us have escaped to explore a different bit of coastline. It feels rather lovely to be able to celebrate my shop birthday while knowing it’s in very safe hands back home.

So I’m raising my glass of amaretto to two years on Fakenham High Street — and to all of you who have been part of them. 🥂

Thank you. I really do love my little shop. ❤️

There are two rather unusual things happening at Claire Howard Jewellery this week…

Firstly, Charlotte is in charge! 👑

We’re taking a week’s break, so Charlotte will be holding the fort, looking after the shop and generally keeping everything running while I’m away.

And secondly…

MY BENCH IS TIDY. 😳

I feel this needs documenting because it is almost certainly a once-in-a-lifetime event. Usually there are tools, scraps of silver, half-finished ideas, drawings, bits I’ve picked up and put down again and approximately 47 things that I definitely still need out.

But this week? Look at it. You can actually see the bench.

Please be nice to Charlotte while I’m away — and perhaps pop in just to witness the extraordinarily tidy bench before I come back and ruin it again. 😂

Shop opening hours while Charlotte is in charge:
Saturday 15th: 10–2
Tuesday 18th – Saturday 22nd: 10–2

Then I’ll be back, normal hours will resume… and I give the bench approximately 17 minutes. 🔨

Sea glass pendants

We had the loveliest workshop yesterday making sea glass necklaces.

I loved that in the room we had someone making a special birthday gift for a close friend, someone using a gift voucher given by best friends for her big birthday, and a mother and daughter celebrating a a birthday. It really was a celebration!

There was also something wonderful about this group- everyone was really encouraging and complimentary of each other’s work, it was such a pleasurable group to spend the day with.

I think this workshop is the hardest of the ones I offer, but everyone always leaves full of pride with what they’ve made.

If you would like to make your own sea glass pendant necklace, then my next workshop is on 29th September. I’ll post the booking link in the comments and I would love to see you making your own necklace! 🌊

🎨 Meet the Artist – Sue Welfare 🐦🌊

If you're visiting Fakenham next week, pop in and say hello to local printmaker Sue Welfare, who’ll be in the shop for 10am till 1pm on Thursday.

Sue will be bringing a selection of hand-carved Indian block along and you'll have the chance to print and take your creation home.

No experience is needed – just drop in, say hello, have a go, and discover the joy of traditional block printing. It's a lovely opportunity to get creative, chat with the artist about her work, and make something unique.

We'd love to see you!

There are some people who become part of a place.

When I taught in a small village school, everyone knew everyone. The children knew all about the staff, the staff knew all the families, and together they created the kind of school that leaves its mark on generations.

Recently, I was asked to make a very special necklace for someone who had been exactly that sort of person.

Pat had worked at Corpusty School for 36 years. As the school prepared to close, her colleagues wanted to gift her with something she could treasure.

Together we designed a silver necklace engraved with the school’s beautiful bell tower – a feature that has become its logo. We also added a single pearl, quietly marking the 36 years she dedicated to the children, families and community.

By complete coincidence, I drove through Corpusty at the weekend. I couldn’t help stopping. Seeing a school with its windows boarded up is incredibly poignant. Through the trees I could still make out the bell tower, and the necklace I’d made took on even greater meaning.

Buildings close. Signs come down. But the people who filled that school with kindness, patience and encouragement are remembered for much longer.

Last night was one of those evenings I’ll never forget!

At Megan and George’s wedding reception, I found myself becoming surprisingly emotional.

Firstly, they looked so genuinely, wonderfully happy. You couldn’t help but smile.

Secondly, everywhere I looked there were people who clearly loved them. Family, friends… the warmth in that room was something really special.

And then I started noticing the jewellery.

Their wedding bands were ones I’d made.

A guest was wearing her Golden Cup necklace and earrings. I spotted an arm cuff I’d made years ago, the pearl earrings I’d given Megan, a pearl necklace, bracelet and earrings, and even a little Holkham cockle bangle. I also spotted some stacking rings!

George and his father-in-law were wearing cufflinks that I helped Megan make, and the bridesmaids were wearing heart necklaces that she’d made with me too.

Before the wedding, Megan said to me, “It’ll probably be the most Claire Howard Jewellery-supported place you’ll ever be.”

She wasn’t wrong.

As a jeweller, you spend most of your days quietly making at the bench. You rarely get to see all those pieces out in the world, let alone together, woven into one family’s story.

I won’t pretend… it made me shed a little tear.

Not because people were wearing my jewellery, but because those little pieces had become part of so many important moments in the lives of people I care about.

What an extraordinary privilege that is.

Tomorrow is a very special day, and I have to admit my thoughts are very much with one of my favourite families today.

Today is Megan’s last day as a Miss, and tomorrow she marries George. 💍

Over the past few months Megan has made several pieces of jewellery for the wedding with me. She made cufflinks for her dad, a necklace for her sister and a necklace and bracelet for her mum (quite how we managed to keep that a surprise from the mothership, I’ll never know!), and tomorrow she’ll be wearing her own special jewellery too.

It’s one of the loveliest parts of my job. Jewellery becomes part of the memories, the photographs, and the stories that are told for years afterwards.

Congratulations, Megan and George. I hope tomorrow is everything you’ve dreamed of. ❤️

I’d love to know… if you’re married, what was the piece of jewellery that meant the most to you on your wedding day? Was it your engagement ring, a family heirloom, a gift, or something made especially for the occasion?
