Calico Angels Calico Angels is an ever changing range of Folk Art inspired dolls, home decorations and garlands, hand made in Devon, England.

Calico Angels products are designed and handmade by Penny Hall, in the heart of Devon. Items available are angel and rag dolls, garlands for children's bedrooms or for grown up's rooms. There are hand beaded hanging hearts, hand painted hearts and even key rings. Any of the range can be personalised. There are seasonal items, check out the gorgeous Christmas range. Items are added throughout the year and commissions are always considered.

I have booked a space at the Exe Valley farm shop Chirstmas craft fair on November 30th. I just need to clarify that any prices given on here were at the time of posting. The items for sale aren't necessarily going to be the same but I thought it best to say something before the event.

I have not attended a public event for a few years so it will be fun to see what it's like and to be able to show my work in person.

This was the first doll I was asked to make from a small business card graphic. The finished doll was almost a metre tall. It was the first time I had to make clothes from a drawing, the folk art style doll clothes are usually very simple basic shapes or just strips of fabric made into skirts with simple gathering. It was a huge undertaking and I seem to remember that the hair took 3 balls of yarn. I must have sewn hundreds of individual strands on. The face is embroidered on, she looked exactly like the picture, which I stupidly did not keep! Very intense experience which pushed my skills at the time but hugely rewarding to have produced such a unique doll x

My very first made to order dolls. She has individually sewn on strands of linen yarn for her hair, embroidered face and hand painted legs and shoes. The skirt is, if I remember correctly, made from 24 strips of fabric sewn together. The painted legs are inspired by my favourite American Folk Art style of doll. Oh, I just realised she has a little glass bead necklace too☺️x

It has been a very long time since I have posted anything so I decided to look through all of my photgraphs of all of my creations, some look pretty bad, but most I am very proud of. I am posting some picures to showcase some of my bespoke dolls and decorations and also to hopefully get some interest in what I do. Here are my newest heart decorations. I have been working on my embroidery stitches for these, lots of practice on lots of scraps of calico! I love making these, I think because every one is different. I like to know that, if you have one of these in your home, you really do have the only one in existence. All of these particulare hearts are made using the gorgeous American 1800s reproduction prints that I have to order from America. It's worth it though to get the authentic folk art look that inspired me to start sewing x

So I picked up some lovely cat fabric from my favourite local fabric shop, Malber's Fabrics in Tiverton, it seemed to lend itself to be turned into a string of hearts. It was a huge pain to line up the cats on both sides but I think the result is really cute. Not the usual kind of print I use but the cats make me smile😊. This will be on its way to Thorne's Farm shop this week with some other things I have been working on x
