It’s been an amazing English summertime-lots of sunshine, no rain for weeks (I have to say my garden is stressed) and the beautiful beaches beckon. We are so blessed here in the southwest with a wonderful coastal path that overlooks fabulous cliffs and turquoise waters bordered by a profusion of wildflowers It’s been a great time for plein air work.
Here are some sketches that I did in situ pinned to the wall, The more detailed mixed media pieces could be used to develop into larger pieces.

What 3 words
Just read something very important and well said on an artist’s website. It was about a conundrum of abstraction: it’s all very well making a bunch of nice marks, but where is the intent? I have always felt abstraction more difficult to master because you have to invent the composition. With realism it is already a problem solved, but in abstraction it is up to you to find the balance, the rhythm, where to lead the eye, how is the design going to work etc.
I recently returned from a painting retreat in Cornwall and what really helped me was to identify what it was that attracted me to a scene. I concentrated on 3 words: HEAT, TURQUIOSE LIGHT. These 3 words kept me focussed on my intent.

Its that time ! Next weekend-Friday, saturday ,sunday and monday is the big weekend where us Totnes Artists throw open our studios and let you in to our world!
Check out the link above to get information on all the amazing artists and a map so you can find us.
There will be cake and tea at mine, and an experiment with the madder i grew last year in an attempt to make a fresh batch of madder lake.
Lots of new works, big and small , and a couple of my favourites from last year all framed up and looking very nice indeed!

It is that time of year again-Totnes Open Studios ! The private view for the collective show is Sunday 3rd May-yes thats tomorrow eve!
Then on the Bank Holiday weekend we open our houses up for you to come and see what we get up to in our studios.I am going to attempt to make a madder lake in my kitchen on the sunday and there will be cake! see you there
