August has arrived and I'm currently in Aberdeenshire, heart of the Highland Games. At present the weather is not too shabby (can't be certain about the coming week... 🌧️)

Across the country (and around the world), grass parks are transforming into arenas for caber tossing, pipe band contests, and a beer tent or two.

Whether you are stepping onto the competition field in a full band, playing a solo march, or cheering from the sidelines with a nip in hand, there’s truly nothing like the sound of pipes echoing across a Scottish summer field.

Behind every grand massed band performance are score sheets that need to be crystal clear. That’s where we come in! Our team works meticulously behind the scenes to edit, arrange, and publish crystal-clear sheet music for bagpipes, so your performance sounds top-tier every single time.

How is your band preparing for this season’s games?

Who doesn't love a steam railway? Especially a narrow guage one.

This is the Talyllyn Railway in Tywyn, Wales which was originally opened in 1865 to transport slate from the quarries down to the main line. It reopened as a heritage railway in 1951.

Running for just over 7 miles and gaining around 700ft in height it's a scenic journey up to where the inclines originally met the line at Nant Gwernol.

It is also the railway that inspired the Reverend W Awdry to write the Thomas the Tank Engine books!!

Although not about this railway, Richard Hubbert's The Little Railway evokes the feelings felt on any small guage railway and can't fail to put a smile on your face.

As one of our directors is currently in Turkey, we thought we'd give a shout out to Ludwig van Beethoven's Turkish March.

Originally written for the Six Variations, Op. 76 in 1809 it was later included in a play by August von Kotzebue called The Ruins of Athens (Op. 113). This premiered in 1812 in Budapest.

This version is arranged for Wind Band by Kevin Lamb is one of our easier pieces aimed at Grade 2 (Associated Board 3-4).

⚡️ What a spectacular sight we've been having over the last 24hrs. ⚡️
The skies have been putting on quite the dramatic performance! As musicians, we can’t help but hear the music in the madness—the deep rumble of the timpani in the thunder, and the sharp, piercing brass in the lightning flashes.

If the weather has you inspired to bring some tempestuous energy to your music stand, we’ve got just the piece to blow the cobwebs away!

🎆 "MINUETS FROM ROYAL FIREWORKS" (arr. Marc Alexander) – After all, lightning is just nature's fireworks! This brilliant arrangement brings all that majestic, flashing grandeur that lights up a room just like a storm lights up the night sky.

Do you photocopy sheet music? Or perhaps your band has decided to go digital and scan parts to pdf?

Have you checked if you are infringing copyright?

There are three main areas of Copyright:
1. The composer’s original ideas (the music) has a copyright that lasts for 70 years after the composer/arranger’s death.
2. The creation of a sound recording or video recording has a copyright of 50 years from the date of production.
3. Finally a typographical production of that music (the sheet music in this case) has a copyright of 25 years from date of publication. This can be extended by the publishers if they re-release the engraved music.

If the copyright in the musical work and the engraved music have both expired, then the publication becomes public domain and you can copy it as many times as you like.

If, however, one or both of these remain in copyright you need permission from the publisher to make copies. This also applies to scanning music to make an electronic copy e.g. a PDF.

Why is this so important? Copyright exists to protect the composer/arranger and copyright owners of their musical works – it’s their livelihood.

You can find out lots more information from the following organisations:
www.makingmusic.org.uk “Music copyright UK: what you need to know”
www.gov.uk “How copyright protects your work”
www.mpaonline.org.uk (Music Publishers Association)
www.rcm.ac.uk Royal College of Music – The Code of Fair Practice

We would urge you to please always get appropriate advice from the appropriate people.

Sad news coming from Sherwood Forest today. The Major Oak has not produced any leaves and has been declared dead.

Did Robin Hood and his Merry Men really shelter under it? Who knows. As someone who comes from Nottinghamshire it was always a major part of my childhood. The legend is an inspiration for so many films and TV programmes - as well as TV adverts!

It felt fitting to honour such a magnificient specimen of a tree with an excerpt from Robin Hood Prince of Thieves. https://bandleader.biz/product/robin-hood-prince-of-thieves-composer-michael-kamenarranger/

Be forever in our hearts. 🌳

🎺 The Sun is (sort of) Out, the Banners are Up—It’s Gala Day Season! 🥁

🎺 Bring Your Band’s Dream Piece to Life! 🥁

Have you ever dreamed of performing a piece of music tailored perfectly to your band's unique sound, strengths, and heritage? Commissioning a brand-new work is an unforgettable milestone for any ensemble, but we know the behind-the-scenes logistics can sometimes feel a bit like trying to tune bagpipes in the pouring rain! 🌧️🎶

That’s where Bandleader Publications steps in. We take the guesswork out of the commissioning process by managing the 5 C’s for you:

✨ The 5 C's of Commissioning:

🤝 Consultation: We chat with you to understand your band’s skill level, instrumentation, and the artistic vision or story you want to tell.

✍️ Composer: Finding the right voice is key. We match your ensemble with the perfect composer or arranger from our talented network to bring your ideas to life.

🔒 Copyright: Sorting out permissions—especially for custom arrangements of existing tunes—can be a legal maze. We handle the paperwork so your performance is fully compliant.

📜 Contracts: We protect everyone involved. We draft clear, professional agreements covering deadlines, exclusivity periods, and performance rights so you can focus entirely on the music.

💰 Costs: No hidden surprises here. We work with you to establish transparent budgeting up front, helping you navigate funding, grants, or crowd-sourcing targets.

From the very first spark of inspiration to the moment the beautifully edited and printed sheet music lands on your music stands, we ensure the journey is smooth, professional, and—most importantly—fun!
