πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§ United Kingdom Full Gold β€œLima” Guinea 1745 – George II

A rare and highly desirable issue which is genuinely challenging to source in any grade. The example on offer here has been previously holed and latterly plugged but otherwise boasts appreciable detail for the type and denomination.

The history behind the gold and silver Lima coinage is fascinating and ultimately begins in the early 1730’s with the incident of Jenkins’ Ear where the Spanish apprehended and ruthlessly searched the ship of a sailer by the name of Robert Jenkins. During this unwelcome search Jenkins was brutally beaten and had one of his ears cut off by a Spanish officer. While this was just one of many events of this nature perpetrated by the Spanish upon the British, it was really the straw which broke the camel’s back and lead to then British Prime Minister Sir Robert Walpole’s declaration of war on the Spanish Empire, thus marking the start of the War of Jenkins’ Ear in 1739.

Struck from a hoard of gold captured from the Spanish by Admiral Anson’s squadron operating in the Pacific Ocean. The word β€œLima” engraved under the bust is a reference to the fact that the Spanish gold was being shipped from Lima, Peru back to Spain when it was intercepted by Anson. The majority of the treasure captured by Anson was actually comprised of silver, and this went on to make the much more commonly encountered Lima crowns, half crowns, shillings, and sixpences.

Gold Lima issues are significantly rarer than their silver counterparts

πŸ‡ͺπŸ‡Έ Spain 4 Escudos 1788-M (Madrid) M – Carlos III – Spanish Colonial Gold Double β€˜Doubloon’

Minted at Real Casa de la Moneda (Royal Mint of Spain) in Madrid in the year of 1788, this lovely Spanish colonial gold 4 Escudos was legal tender in the United States up until 1857 and had a value of eight Spanish dollars ($8).

As a relatively new and independent country, at least by the Old World’s standards, the United States did not have the time nor the money to establish sophisticated minting procedures for the production of hard currency. Consequently, day-to-day commerce and trading took place on the basis of the pre-established Spanish escudo.

The Spanish escudo was struck in five denominations of gold coins: 1/2 and 1 Escudo and 2, 4 and 8 Escudos respectively. There were colloquial names for these variations, such as β€˜doubloon’ or β€˜pistole’ for the two escudos piece and β€˜quadruple doubloon’ or β€˜quadruple pistole’ for the largest eight escudos piece.

The importance of the Spanish escudo, and the colonial coinage system in general, in fact, cannot be overlooked when considering the establishment of the U.S. dollar and the birth of America’s own coinage. In fact, the Spanish colonial coinage system has often been referred to as β€˜the blueprint of U.S. currency,’ and NGC themselves have a dedicated special label highlighting the legal tender status of the Spanish escudo in America up until 1857.

The obverse of this coin features King Carlos III of Spain flanked by Latin script. The date of 1788 resides beneath.

The reverse features the Spanish crowned arms in the Distinguished Order of the Golden Fleece. This was a catholic order of chivalry and was founded by Philip the Good. Featuring prominently on Spanish coinage, the history of this iconic symbol goes back to the 15th century when Philip the Good’s knights were notably named β€˜The Order of the Golden Fleece.’ Their symbol was a lamb suspended in a ribbon, owing in part to the highly prized wool flocks that amassed Philip his fortune.
