Hugo dialling in a few sunny May moments before it ends in no particular order 😂 What even is “order” these days…? Embracing the chaos and a serious 18month old tornado toddlerhood with all its carnage and beauty all at once ♥️ The last slide melts my heart if you have the time to get to it 🎶

5 years on and I am so grateful to still be making memories with you 💛 So lovely to receive your kind messages, beautiful words and your impressions of our tiny shop upon your first discovery or as a returning friend. We’re on the first name basis with so many of you now. There simply wouldn’t be a shoppy shop without ✨YOU✨ I’ve never been very good at receiving compliments, but just know that my heart melts each time I do. Thank you for everything, we love you guys 🙏🏻

Just wanted to add a small drop to the ocean of loving tributes to the recent passing of (Brian). I once had the honour of exhibiting with Brian in a group show called ‘Citizen’ some 20 years ago now. I didn’t know many people back then and was only finding my feet as an artist. I had so much respect for him and have been such a huge fan of his work. I was always hugely inspired by him and so deeply touched by how gracious, kind and generous he was with his time. There was a bit of a scene back then in Edinburgh and I was lucky enough to be surrounded by quite a lot of his work as original pieces of his adorned really great places such as the Villager (where I worked as a student) and the Dragonfly in Edinburgh. If my memory serves me correctly, there were many Old Town spots where you could find his work, such as Pieute, The Bongo Club, a place called Also Known As, then there was also a really special little bookstore called Analogue Books, I’d go there a lot for their Street Art magazine section. It was a great time to live in the city. We had many mutual artist friends and we would have little chats about things at various exhibitions and you always remember how someone made you feel. He was always so encouraging when I was shy, always humble, truly a beautiful person who will be missed by so many. Now, 20 years on we’re still surrounded by his art, especially here in Leith. I pass two of his murals daily and I always think of him and what a lovely person he was. What a special thing that is to know, that every time people see his many pieces scattered all over the city they will be thinking the same and how much beauty and light he has spread and left all around. I love that for him. So sorry for the loss to his nearest and dearest and to everyone who loved and admired him. Your light lives on 🤍

Et voila! Here’s the ‘pièce de résistance’ as we conclude our antique restoration trio. This beautiful black swan is an antique late Victorian/ Edwardian-era mourning jacket, dating to the late 1800s or early 1900s. Don’t worry though, I’m not really mourning anything other than the loss and the lack of time!

The tailored b***d bodice is made from wool (authentic pieces from this period were typically fashioned from wool) it features a classic late Victorian silhouette, elaborate embroidered floral lace panels, original mutton sleeves and a ribbon waistband.

Typically I’d say, go and make yourself a brew and enjoy the slides if you want to see the process but I hope the dirty water doesn’t put you off your coffee! ☕️ I also had to whisper in a few videos because I was working on it during Hugo’s naps. I love so much about my job and learn so much daily, it’s fascinating. For instance I didn’t know that during this era, social customs dictated specific stages of mourning, with “half-mourning” allowing for slightly more decorative fabrics like silk and lace (such as our bodice) once the initial period of deep, matte mourning had passed.

🖤Victorian mourning clothes were a highly ritualized system of dress dictated by strict social etiquette. Popularized by Queen Victoria who wore black for 40 years following the death of Prince Albert, this custom required grievers to transition through distinct stages of black, non-reflective garments before returning to regular attire.🩶

Over the last few months I’ve been quietly opening on Fridays to see how it feels before officially committing to 2 days a week at the shoppy shop. Didn’t want to over-promise as I’m still surviving on half a handful of broken up hours of sleep for what has been 1 year and a half now with Hugo. We fully expected our lives to change, but no one could’ve prepared us for our small but mighty tornado! If you’ve seen my latest post, you’ll know how much work goes on behind the scenes and how long it takes to prepare freshly sourced stock for you… but slowly I’m building up to being able to open a bit more frequently. For now you can always find me at the shoppy shop on Saturdays between 1-5:30pm and also on Fridays amidst the chaos with more flexible hours and soon I’m hoping to start weaving in Thursday afternoons, but it’s all with gentle baby steps, so do bare with me. Also wanted to mention that because we live very close by I often open by appointment too, so never be shy to drop me a message if you’re in the area and fancied a peruse. Gives me a perfect reason to open our lovely old door to you more often. Lots of love and see you soon, Asta x

I’ve acquired this antique beauty for a shoot that fell through before Hugo was born and have been sporadically repairing it on and off ever since! Finally at loooong last it is finished! I had many aspirations for it and I do hope it will now find a special home. If you want to see some of the painstaking processes which I’ve poured into it, feel free to pour yourself a cuppa and swipe through the slides… she’s an old girl and the mends felt like they took 100 years but she was totally worth it in my eyes 🦢 Enjoy! x
