📜 Calling all history fans! There are still some spaces left on our Market History Tour, this coming Wednesday at 10:30am! 📜

The incredibly knowledgeable David Butler is hosting a totally free market history tour on Wednesday, the 10th of June, at 10:30am. In this tour, which lasts approximately 45-50 minutes, David will take you back in time, where you will uncover centuries of stories: from the Market Place’s medieval beginnings as a trading hub, to the Victorian rebuild of 1851 that gave us the Market Hall we know today, right through to today’s bustling hub of independent traders.

The tour takes you around the outside and inside of the Market Hall, giving you a whole new perspective on one of Durham’s most historic buildings. It’s the perfect way to see the city from a different perspective, whether you’re a local or just visiting. Homeschooler? This is a brilliant way to bring the history lessons outside of the classroom!

🗓 When? Wednesday, 10th June at 10:30am
📍 Where? Meet at the top of the main entrance ramp to the Market Hall
⏳ How long? Around 45-50 minutes
💷 Cost? Absolutely FREE!

📸 Booking isn't essential, but as it's designed for small numbers, if you want to guarantee your place, please email [email protected] or message our page.

PLEASE NOTE: As this tour will involve taking you around the back of the Market Hall and onto Back Silver Street, there will be steps.

💗 As National Volunteers' Week draws to a close, we couldn't let it pass without saying a huge thank you to some of Durham's unsung heroes – the wonderful Durham Pointers! 💗

If you've spent any time in Durham city centre, chances are you've spotted their bright pink tabards and their equally eye-catching pink information bike in the Market Place.

But they're so much more than a friendly face with a map.

From helping visitors find their way around our beautiful city, to recommending hidden gems, attractions, cafés and local businesses, the Durham Pointers provide a warm welcome to thousands of people every year. They are often the very first people coach visitors meet when arriving in Durham, helping to create that all-important first impression of our city.

Whether you're looking for the Cathedral, the nearest toilets, an accessible route, a place to eat, or simply a friendly chat, they're always ready to help with a smile.

All of this is done entirely by volunteers who generously give up their time because they love Durham and want others to love it too.

So as we round off National Volunteers' Week, we'd like to say a heartfelt thank you to every single Durham Pointer, past and present. Your dedication, kindness and local knowledge help make Durham the welcoming city that it is.

Next time you see one of these fabulous volunteers in the Market Place, why not stop and say hello? 👋

💗 Thank you for everything you do.

☀️ New Summer Menu at Cafe Cenno! ☀️

The new summer menu has landed at Cafe Cenno, and, honestly, we can't get enough of it! Some of our personal favourite additions are:
🫐 Blueberry, maple and cinnamon buns
🧋Blueberry-and-maple pancake latte (including the matcha version!)
🫓 Creamy portobello mushrooms on toast
🌶 Sweet heat crispy chicken burger
🥗 Chicken Caesar salad

Make sure that the next time you come into our Market Hall, you head upstairs and treat yourself to something delicious from their new menu. After all, you do deserve it! 😇

After 8 wonderful years on Durham Outdoor Market, we’re saying a very sad goodbye to June and Laura from Flaura Rose. ❤️

June has always been the Mama of the Market. The one who looks out for everyone, checks in when you’re having a bad day, and somehow knows what’s happening before anyone else does. ❤️

And Laura? Simply one of the loveliest people you’ll ever meet. Kind, hardworking and always smiling!

Together they’ve been such a huge part of the Durham Market family for the last 8 years, and they will be genuinely missed by traders and customers alike.

While we’re incredibly sad to see them go, we’re also so excited to see where the next chapter takes them.

Flaura Rose in Ouseburn has grown into something really special, and we know it will continue to flourish.

The outdoor market won’t be quite the same without our Mama June and lovely Laura. We wish you both all the luck, happiness and success in the world. ❤️💐✨

🇬🇧🐟 Did you know that today is National Fish & Chip Day? 🍟🇬🇧

What better excuse to celebrate one of Britain's most iconic dishes than with a recipe from the Market Hall fish experts themselves?

Whether you like yours with mushy peas, curry sauce, tartare sauce, or simply a generous splash of vinegar, there's something undeniably comforting about tucking into a plate of perfectly crispy fish and golden chips.

Our friends at IK Fish have shared their simple beer-battered cod recipe so you can recreate a classic chippy favourite at home. Using fresh, quality fish is the secret to achieving that flaky, melt-in-the-mouth centre wrapped in a beautifully crisp, golden batter.

If you would like to give this recipe a try, why not pop into IK Fish in Durham Market Hall and pick up some of the freshest fish in the city? After more than 40 years of serving Durham, they certainly know a thing or two about great seafood!

Will you be celebrating National Fish & Chip Day today? Let us know your favourite way to enjoy this British classic below 👇

Now, here's a question for you: scraps... yes or no? And do you call them something different? Let's start the debate!😆

⚠️ One of our customers has lost their ring 💍, shown in the photo. ⚠️

We would love to return it to them, so if you're out and about in the city centre, please could you keep an eye out for it and hand it in to the management office on the mezzanine level of our Market Hall or one of the amazing Durham Pointers, who you can find out on the Market Place. It's a very distinctive ring, so hopefully, it will be easy to spot. Let's help reunite them!
