A very special evening at Sledmere House…

Team Esther in the Garden were kindly invited to an evening soirée in the beautiful Walled Garden at Sledmere House, to celebrate its place as one of just six finalists for the Garden of the Year award 2026, in association with Christie's

And what a lovely evening it was…

We had the chance to wander through the glorious 18th-century Walled Garden, taking in the beautiful planting, and chatting with members of the gardening team about the care and work that goes into looking after this stunning garden.

Sledmere is the only garden in Yorkshire to have made this year’s shortlist, alongside five other wonderful historic gardens from across the UK, so it feels particularly special to have been invited to celebrate with them.

Historic houses and their gardens have always felt very much like home to me, having spent nearly 20 years working in the heritage world. And there’s an extra special connection with Sledmere… I volunteered here as a teenager, so to find myself back in the Walled Garden all these years later, now through Esther in the Garden, felt rather lovely indeed.

A huge congratulations to everyone at Sledmere. The dedication of the gardening team really shines through, and the Walled Garden is quite something.

If you haven’t visited yet, I really hope you’ll make time to go and see it for yourself this summer.

Sledmere is flying the flag for Yorkshire in this year’s awards, so please do cast your vote and help this beautiful garden take the title!

Head to the Historic Houses Association website to vote (link in stories)

With thanks to Sledmere for such a warm welcome, and a wonderfully relaxed evening.

High summer in the cutting garden…

Dahlias, asters, zinnias, cosmos, grasses and all sorts of cottage garden favourites are filling my buckets at the moment.

This week they’ve been gathered into bouquets and arrangements, as well as flowers for a couple of lovely events. It’s such a beautiful point in the season… when the garden is abundant and there’s so much to gather.

There are still plenty of flowers to come, but the season won’t last forever. If you’d like some seasonal flowers for a celebration, an event, or simply to enjoy at home, do get in touch…

I just ask for at least 24 hours’ notice so I have time to cut, condition and carefully arrange your flowers.

Seasonal flowers, grown and gathered here in the Yorkshire Wolds… while they last.

The flower that travelled from China to the heart of the British cottage garden…

Each August, as they begin to bloom in my Yorkshire Wolds cutting garden, I find myself thinking of eighteenth-century chinoiserie fabrics… soft, painterly hues, delicate florals and an enduring fascination with the beauty of the East.

Although the fashion for chinoiserie was already sweeping through Britain, China Asters (Callistephus chinensis) arrived in Europe during the late eighteenth-century. Native to China and Korea, they soon found their way into British gardens, where they became treasured for flowering just as many summer blooms were beginning to fade.

Victorian gardeners couldn’t get enough of them. Plant breeders transformed the simple wild flower into the beautifully quilled, incurved and pompon blooms we adore today.

I love imagining the journey these flowers have taken… from the mountains and grasslands of East Asia to my own small cutting garden here in the Yorkshire Wolds.

Yesterday I had the pleasure of delivering my flowers to a beautiful York wedding…

One of the greatest privileges of my work is knowing that, for just one day, the flowers I’ve spent months growing become part of someone else’s memories. They’re there in the quiet moments before the ceremony, in the photographs that will be treasured for years to come, and become part of the story of their wedding day.

Every bouquet and arrangement for this York wedding was created using flowers grown here in my own cutting garden, alongside some additional beautiful seasonal stems from two of my trusted flower-growing colleagues, Binnington Blooms and

As I only take on a small number of weddings each year, I’m able to give each one the time and thought it deserves… considering the colours, textures, shapes and movement that will complement everything you’ve chosen for your day.

And that’s what makes seasonal wedding flowers so special. Rather than working from a fixed catalogue, I work with what the garden is giving me at that particular time of year, gathering flowers when they’re looking their absolute best.

The result is something natural, abundant and completely personal… with the character, scent and beautiful little surprises that come from flowers grown and gathered locally.

And to this lovely couple… thank you for trusting me with such an important part of your wedding day. You were an absolute dream to work with, and it was a real pleasure creating your flowers. Wishing you both a lifetime of happiness together. 🤍

If you’re planning a wedding in York, the Yorkshire Wolds or anywhere across Yorkshire in 2027 or 2028, and you’re looking for seasonal wedding flowers that feel personal, natural and a little bit different, I’d love to hear your plans…

From seed to celebration…

Each of these delicate flowers was grown in my Yorkshire Wolds cutting garden before being carefully gathered and transformed into a flower crown and buttonholes for one very lovely Yorkshire Wolds wedding.

I believe those little details deserve just as much care as the bridal bouquet. A flower crown for the smallest member of the bridal party… delicate buttonholes to be proudly worn… each one thoughtfully made using the very best the cutting garden had to offer the week of your wedding.

There’s something rather special about wearing flowers that have been nurtured from seed, gathered at their seasonal best and arranged by the very person who grew them.

If you’re planning a Yorkshire wedding and are dreaming of naturally styled, seasonal flowers with a relaxed, garden-inspired feel, I’d love to help bring your ideas to life.

Flower crowns have been popular this season. I’d love to know… if you were choosing your wedding flowers, would a flower crown be on your wish list?

While I won’t be at the Driffield Show today, it’s for a very lovely reason… I’m busy in the cutting garden and studio, preparing flowers for a beautiful wedding in Foston on the Wolds 🤍

If you’re heading to the show, I’d love it if you stopped by to say hello to the wonderful Stella from Stella's Larder Driffield . She’ll be showcasing some of the fantastic local producers she champions, and I’m so grateful that Esther in the Garden is one of them.

There’ll be a couple of my seasonal flower arrangements on display as part of her stand, celebrating the beauty of locally grown flowers and the wonderful businesses we’re so lucky to have here in Yorkshire.

I hope everyone has a wonderful day at the show, and I’ll be looking forward to sharing a little glimpse of this weekend’s wedding very soon…

A little flashback to a wedding from a few weeks ago…

There’s something so timeless about a floral crown, especially when it’s filled with freshly gathered, seasonal flowers. Soft, romantic and a little wild, this one had beautiful Titania-inspired woodland magic, paired with the sweetest buttonholes for the wedding party.

Every stem was grown and gathered here in my Yorkshire Wolds cutting garden, celebrating the fleeting beauty of the season and creating flowers that felt completely at home on such a special day

If you’re dreaming of naturally styled wedding flowers that reflect the season and the landscape around you, I’d love to help bring your ideas to life…

These flowers all began their life in the Yorkshire Wolds, and ended up in the hands of a beautiful bride at Beverley Minster…

On Friday, this bouquet made its way from our cutting garden to a stunning wedding in Beverley.

Almost every stem had been growing here with me, until just a day or two before the wedding. From sowing tiny seeds and planting young seedlings, to watering, weeding and waiting patiently for each stem to reach its perfect moment… caring for these flowers has been part of my everyday life for many many months.

A couple of stems came from a trusted fellow flower grower Binnington Blooms here in the Yorkshire Wolds, whose beautiful blooms complemented those grown here in my own cutting garden. Together, they created a bouquet that couldn’t have belonged to any other place, or any other week.

One of the loveliest things about working with flowers grown this way is that they can never be repeated exactly. They tell the story of that particular week, that particular garden and, now, of a particular wedding day too.

It feels rather special to think that flowers which have spent their lives growing beneath Yorkshire skies became part of a couple’s wedding day and will forever be woven into those memories…

Congratulations to the happy couple. Thank you for trusting me with your wedding flowers and for allowing me to share a little piece of the Yorkshire Wolds with you on such a special day.
