Not typically considered a writer of children’s stories, James Joyce originally wrote ‘The Cat and the Devil’ as a letter to his grandson Stephen. He retells the story of the cat of Beaugency, a town on the Loire, and the difficulties the town experienced when the Devil came to stay.

“Long live OneState! Long live the Numbers! Long live the Benefactor!” Yevgeny Zamyatin, We

We is a seminal dystopian novel set in the 26th-century
‘One State,’ a totalitarian society where citizens (‘numbers’) live in glass buildings, under constant surveillance, and follow a rigid, mathematical schedule under the watchful eye of the ‘The Benefactor’. The narrator, mathematician D-503, begins to develop independant thought and rebels against the state after falling for the seductive revolutionary I-330.

Orwell was deeply influenced by ‘We’. He reviewed a
translation of the book for the socialist magazine ‘Tribune’ in 1946, three years before publishing Nineteen Eighty-Four and explicitly credited Zamyatin for his vision.
