Davis Tackle are located at the entrance to the famous Royalty Fishery in Christchurch where we have been dispensing tackle and specialist advice to coarse, sea and game anglers for over 70 years. Having tripled the size of the shop over the past few years we now stock all the major suppliers across every fishing discipline and are able to display a massive range of rods and reels in the shop. We

now have an extensive fly tying department to complement our range of over 800 different ready tied flies. Situated between the Royalty and Throop fisheries we hold one of the largest ranges of barbel rods and centrepins available anywhere, including our own exclusive range of Harrison rods. Top quality fresh and frozen bait for both coarse and sea fishing is always available. Check out our website for comprehensive information on available fishing in Hampshire & Dorset.

This was probably my favourite shop window display of them all in over 20 years, and for most of them we had three windows to do.

Id met the absolute star Mike O’Neill through Trefor around the time Mike launched Lone Angler to the tackle trade. He was just brilliant to work with, what I saw as a problem he saw as an opportunity. The best example that comes to mind is when I said I couldn’t stock his new baits as I didn’t have any shelf space.

A week later he had a carpenter in to move two existing shelves and fit a third!😂

The tackle was also proudly manufactured in the UK.

Obviously the display was done by Lone Angler, there’s no chance that I, Helen, Jon or Pete could have done such a great job.

Great to see the Royalty has had its first salmon today, 25lbs from Top Stile.

After all the appalling conditions the salmon anglers have endured the last few years, this one is well deserved.

I’ve still got this copy of the Angling Times from October 1972. Back then I was a 12 year old school kid that was obsessed with barbel and the Royalty and I still remember the excitement of reading this that first time.

It’s an interesting read and shines a light on just how much barbel fishing has changed in half a century. Younger anglers reading this might be astonished at the tactics, and particularly the breaking strain of mainline Jack used, but those tactics were unbelievably successful back then.

Just uncovered this photo of me with my third 9lb 15oz barbel from the Royalty, back in the early 80’s. Caught from Trammels my favourite stretch on the fishery. I was gutted it wasn’t a double.

Looking at the photo, I was still smoking Marlboro back then, my rod and landing net were hardy and the reel was an Avon Royal Supreme.

Below the Railway, the Royalty is currently basically a lake, bar the west bank from the Boathouse round to Brewhouse Hole. In these conditions you’ll find slacks that appear around the fishery that only appear in these times of flood.

The angler in this photo is taking full advantage of the conditions.

I try to keep out of politics.

We’ve had this collection box for Help for Heroes in the shop for about 17 years.

To the person last year who said the dirt on the label on box was disrespectful, maybe think that it got that dirty because we had to open it so regularly as our customers never forgot George.

He certainly wasn’t killed being deployed back from the front line.

We can see we’ve been messaged by a couple of people but for some reason we can’t actually read them.

One was from pike angler we know well, the other was, we think, asking how to buy a DT for the Royalty now we’ve retired.

To the latter, either go the excellent Christchurch Angling Centre to buy your ticket or get it from the South West Lakes Trust website.

Apologies but we seem to have lost the ability to actually read any messages we get.

Walking the West Bank of the fishery this afternoon with the mutt, ostensibly on a pointless ticket check as there were no anglers to actually check - the were all on the east bank! 😂

On my walk round I was astonished to see a pike that was easy 30lbs + sitting about three feet from the bank quietly finning just off the main flow. She was huge, just stunning, she noticed the movement when I went to get my phone out to take a photo and just slid back into deeper water.

So relieved to see there’s at least one big girl on the fishery.

Just back from raising a glass of sloe gin and eating a few sausage rolls on Christmas morning, in memory of local angler Stacky, who we lost way too young.

Merry Christmas to you all.

Weirdly FB has just suggested this as a memory to me, despite it being 11 years ago.

I’ve been privileged to witness the weighing of four genuine 30lb+ H. Avon pike over the years, but this capture was the most memorable for me.

Here’s a few previously unpublished photos of that amazing fish.

Walked the Royalty in the rain today, and got caught in a torrential downpour, I was fine but the dog got absolutely soaked.😂

Only saw two anglers braving the conditions and both had caught barbel.
