π¬π§ The Waterloo Medal β A Landmark in British Military History π¬π§
Today marks the anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo, fought on 18th June 1815, where the forces of the Duke of Wellington and his allies defeated Napoleon and brought an end to more than twenty years of conflict across Europe.
For medal collectors, Waterloo is remembered not only for the battle itself but also for the famous Waterloo Medal.
Issued in 1816, it was the first campaign medal awarded to all ranks of the British Army who took part in a battle. Previous awards had generally been reserved for officers, making the Waterloo Medal a significant step in recognising the service of ordinary soldiers alongside their commanders.
Collectors will often notice that Waterloo Medals frequently have replacement suspension rings. The original rings were prone to rusting and corrosion, leading many recipients to have jewellers fit more durable replacement suspenders during their lifetime.
More than 210 years after the battle, the Waterloo Medal remains one of the most iconic and historically important British campaign medals, linking collectors directly to one of the defining moments in European history.
