We had such an amazing time at the Gloworm Festival in Nottinghamshire this weekend! 🐛📚

There is something so special about a book that a child chooses for themselves.

Not because it was assigned.
Not because it was on a list.
Just because it caught their eye.
That kind of choice matters.

It gives children ownership. It makes reading feel less like a task and more like something that belongs to them.

During the summer, those small choices can make a real difference 💛

A book picked up on a day out might become the one that gets read at bedtime, packed in a bag or talked about all week.

This is where confidence starts. 📚

Our favourite books for summer are the ones that come with you.

Summer reading does not need to be complicated.

Getting the bus ready for Gloworm Festival!

Before the Bus heads out, there’s always that familiar bit of organised chaos. Books coming in, shelves being topped up, boxes being packed and the team making sure there’s something for every kind of young reader.

Some of our favourite moments happen away from the classroom.

At fairs, festivals and community days, we meet families who were not planning to buy a book, but stop for a look anyway.

A child spots a cover. A parent says, “Go on then.” And suddenly a book is heading home.

That is the mission in action too.

Being visible matters. Being easy to access matters. Showing up where families already are matters.

Because reading confidence is not built in one place. It grows wherever children are given the chance to choose.

The Bus had a brilliant time meeting families, chatting books, and seeing so many young readers stop by to find something new.

Days like this remind us why we love taking The Book Bus out into the community. You never quite know who is going to step aboard, what they will pick up, or which book will be the one they take home.

How do we choose what books make it onto The Book Bus?

Very carefully, obviously.

Although every now and then, we do let the chair decide.

It may not be the most scientific method, but if it lands on a book children will want to pick up, we’re calling it research.

And just like that, another school year comes to a close.

Thank you to every school that has welcomed The Book Bus this year, and to every child who has stepped on board, had a look around, changed their mind three times, and finally found the book they wanted.

That part never gets old.

As the summer holidays begin, we hope young readers keep finding books they want to pick up, wherever the break takes them.

School may be out, but The Book Bus will still be out and about at festivals, retail parks and community visits, so keep an eye out.
