O, Soor Ploom! thou puck’rin gem,
Wi’ sugar’d crust an’ tartest stem,
Ye gar the weans forget their skem,
An’ grown folk grin;
A wee round blast o’ tongue-tip flame
Wrapped up in tin.

When winter haar creeps ower the brae,
An’ licht rins thin at end o’ day,
A ploom within the pooch can sway
The dour’est mood;
Like sudden sang on hogmanay
Or dram sae guid.

The first bite strikes—a cannon’s kiss!
The een screw shut, the mooth aye twists,
Yet still the eager haund insists:
“Just ane mair try!”
For pain an’ pleasure tangled is
‘Neath Scotland’s sky.

The lad at mill, the lass at fair,
The grannie in her creakin chair,
Ha’e kent thy sting, abrupt an’ rare,
Since days lang syne;
A sour wee bauble rich beyond compare,
O ploom divine!

So here’s tae thee, confection bold,
Whae mocks the weak, rewards the cold,
More dear tae me than minted gold
Or fancy groom:
Lang may thy purple glory hold,
Immortal Ploom!
