The warmer weather is something many of us look forward to, but it can be challenging for our pets. Unlike us, dogs and other animals can struggle to regulate their body temperature, making them more vulnerable to overheating during hot spells.
A few simple precautions can make a big difference:
✓ Walk during the cooler early morning or evening hours
✓ Check the pavement before allowing your dog to walk on it
✓ Carry fresh drinking water when away from home
✓ Provide plenty of shade and airflow
✓ Reduce strenuous exercise and energetic play
✓ Never leave a pet inside a parked car, conservatory or other enclosed space
✓ Watch carefully for signs of overheating
Heavy panting, excessive drooling, weakness, confusion, vomiting or collapse can be signs of heatstroke. Move your pet to a cool area, begin cooling them with cool not ice cold water and contact a vet immediately.
