Quick care tip for rhizome plants — Anubias, Java Fern, Bucephalandra. Don't bury the rhizome (the thick horizontal stem the leaves grow from) in your substrate. It'll rot. Instead, tie or glue it to driftwood or rock and let the roots find their own way into the wood. Simple fix, saves a lot of plants.

New stock landed this week. A few of our favourites from this delivery: Schismatoglottis prietoi — broad, heart-shaped leaves, easy care. Cardamine lyrata — fast-growing stem plant, easy care. Anubias heterophylla — tall, elegant leaves, easy care. Echinodorus 'Ozelot Green' — bold dark-spotted leaves, a real centrepiece. Echinodorus 'Fancy Twist' — twisted, spiralling sword leaves. Amano Shrimp are one of the best algae-eating shrimp you can add to a freshwater planted tank — they actively graze on hair algae, soft green algae and diatoms, and clear up leftover food before it fouls your water. Completely peaceful, so they're safe in a community tank. Rule of thumb: 1 shrimp per 10L, or 1 per 5L if you're fighting an active algae problem. Sold in packs of 5, £20.

Common beginner mistake: epiphyte plants like Java Fern, Anubias and Bucephalandra should never go in your substrate. Bury the rhizome and it'll rot over time. Instead, tie or glue them to wood or rock — they're built to grow attached to hardscape, not planted in soil. Small change, much longer-lasting plants.

This week's delivery has landed, and a few plants from the batch caught our eye: Java Fern, Hygrophila Siamensis 53B, Bucephalandra Kedagang and Ludwigia Super Red for easy colour and structure, Hydrocotyle tripartita as a foreground carpet plant, Limnophila heterophylla for mid-background cover, plus Echinodorus argentinensis XL if you're after a proper centrepiece. Quick tip: carpet plants like Hydrocotyle need decent light to spread well, so check your setup before you buy. Stock's tight on the argentinensis XL — only 2 came in.
