Coming up this week on Friday we have a few more Oco Geodes from Brazil, and the wonderful Christina Tinworth has done another deep dive into the formations of these gorgeous pieces, and what causes the white "feathers" 🧐 read her report below!

Oco geodes are found in the Rio Grande do Sul region of Brazil and are easily recognised by the feathery patterns within the walls of the cut agate, which some have thought may be caused by bacteria during the formation of the agate. However, this is unlikely to be the case. The Oco agates formed within the ParanΓ‘ Basin in the Early Cretaceous around 143-100 million years ago in cooled lava flows that marked the opening of the South Atlantic Ocean as South America and Africa were pushed apart by plate tectonics.

Voids caused by gases in the original lava in the cooled basalt were then filled with relatively cool hydrothermal fluids (~50oC) containing a high concentration of silica which then formed a gel within the voids. These gels have the consistency ranging from thick honey to set gelatin and form directly onto the irregular walls of the voids within the basalt rock and grow in bands that follow the texture of the wall of the void.

Changes in the concentrations of silica in the hydrothermal fluids and gravity meant that the fibrous silica growth in the gel changed direction before the gel was fully crystallised, explaining how the flame patterns seem to curl back towards the wall of the void when seen in the walls of cut agates. This is because the flame patterns are actually the cross section of 3 dimensional β€˜hummocks’ within the geode. Leaching of the iron and manganese from the surrounding basalt by the hydrothermal fluids give some specimens their orange-brown colouration and increase the contrast between the feathery patterns and the surrounding crystalline agate.

As the concentration of silica in the hydrothermal fluids decreased, the final larger quartz crystals were allowed to grow on the inside of the geodes.
