June is a month of full throttle on the farm.

With silage cuts underway, grass growth peaking and livestock out at pasture, now is the time to stay ahead of what the season throws at you.

This month, we're focusing on:

๐ŸŒฟ Forage Planning - knowing what you have and what you need
๐ŸŒก๏ธ Heat Stress Management - don't wait for a heatwave
๐Ÿ„ Calf Nutrition - why the pre-weaning period matters most
๐Ÿชฃ Mineral Supplementation - Summer Garlic and Double Mag buckets
๐Ÿ’ง Water - the invisible nutrient in calf rearing

We've put it all together in our latest blog, read more here ๐Ÿ‘‡

As we move into June, most grazing stock is now out and many farms have taken first cut silage or are very close to doing so.

Across our trading area we are seeing huge variations in grass growth and quality alongside some unpredictable weather and in some cases 4 seasons in 1 day! In the east we have had a very dry spell coupled with low night time temperatures and some frosts that are holding back growth of both grass and other crops, maize drilling is underway but soil temperatures are still hovering below the required 8-10 degrees.

Yields of grass on those farms having completed first cut are again variable and depend upon winter regime and whether pastures were grazed or not. Aftermaths and grazing platforms are quite slow to recover and in dry areas fertiliser uptake will be limited by moisture.

The key discussions we are having on farm already centre around forage, lower yields last year have led to many running short this spring and clamps being empty or very tight on stocks. Planning what will be required for the year now and assessing what is produced through the season allows alternative options to be explored before it becomes a problem.

That might be use of forage extenders such as fibre products or moist feeds or looking at alternative forage crops such as wholecrop or maize to bolster supplies. If first cuts have being poor or some leys are past their best and underperforming now is a perfect time to look at reseeding or overseeding options to get things back on track.

My take home message is know what you are working with, know what you need and assess what you have whether thatโ€™s testing grass to check suitability for cutting/grazing or forage in the clamp. If you need help with planning or testing forage or want to discuss alternative options then speak to your DN Sales Specialist or give us a call 01200 420200.

Our Ruminant Sales Specialist Issy recently called in on customer Robert Fitton at Mootop Dairy, Bolton, to take a look at the new on-farm vending machine โ€“ turning fresh milk straight into a fantastic finished product ๐Ÿฅ›โžก๏ธ๐Ÿฅค

Itโ€™s brilliant to see farms adding value like this, connecting directly with local customers and showcasing exactly where their milk comes from. Safe to say Issy had to give the milkshake a tryโ€ฆ and it didnโ€™t disappoint! ๐Ÿ˜„๐Ÿ“

A great example of forward-thinking farming and making the most of whatโ€™s produced on farm.

When the weather finally gives the green light for first cut silage, there's no time to waste - and it was a pleasure to head out recently and join William Bristol on his farm to capture that moment first hand.

William farms just a stone's throw from our Clitheroe mill and has been a valued customer of both Dugdale Nutrition and our sister company RBC Agri for a number of years. Seeing the relationship between good grassland management and quality livestock nutrition playing out in real life on a local farm is exactly what both businesses are about.

William was kind enough to let us film him taking his first cut, and to have a chat about his cows. As a customer of RBC Agri as well as Dugdale Nutrition, William is a great example of how the two businesses work hand in hand - with grass seed, reseeding advice and agronomy support on one side, and tailored compound feeds, minerals and nutritional expertise on the other.

May round-up | Dugdale Nutrition

It's been another brilliant month!

Here's what May looked like at Dugdale Nutrition:

๐ŸŽฌ First cut silage season - we captured some fabulous footage out on farm with one of our RBC Agri & Dugdale Nutrition customers as they took their first cut. A great reminder of why we love what we do.

๐ŸŒฑ Nutrition programmes reviewed, re-seeding and over-seeding advice delivered - the team have been busy keeping farms performing at their best as the season builds.

๐Ÿš› The DN Wagon WhatsApp group has been pinging with wagon pictures, our drivers have been out in force keeping everything moving.

๐Ÿ“œ A piece of history landed on our desk, we were sent a Dugdale Nutrition invoice that is over 125 years old! A wonderful reminder of the heritage behind the Dugdale Nutrition business.

๐Ÿ† Another fantastic Farming Friday competition, the engagement from our farming community never fails to put a smile on our faces. You lot are the best!

๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐ŸŒพ The team have been out and about on-farm and visiting suppliers to see first-hand where our premixes come from. Knowing your product from the ground up matters.

๐Ÿ“š Our sales team completed training with Cargill covering everything from colostrum quality and calf feeder management to dry cow heat stress and the remarkable impact it can have across three generations at once. Investing in knowledge is investing in our customers.

A brilliant month all round. Onwards to June ๐ŸŒฑ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ„

๐Ÿฅ› Happy World Milk Day! ๐Ÿ„๐Ÿฅ›

Today we take a moment to celebrate something close to our hearts, the incredible dedication of dairy farmers and everyone across the supply chain who works tirelessly to produce the nutritious, high-quality milk that feeds families across the UK and beyond.

At Dugdale Nutrition, we're proud to work alongside dairy farmers every single day: supporting herd health, optimising nutrition programmes, and playing our small part in helping British dairy thrive.

And on that noteโ€ฆ how many pints of milk do you think we get through here at Dugdale Nutrition per week? ๐Ÿค” And more importantly.....which department do you think drinks the most brews?! Let us know your guesses in the comments ๐Ÿ‘‡

Here's to British dairy. ๐Ÿ„๐Ÿฅ›
