Jackdaw Bindery

Jackdaw Bindery Jackdaw Bindery is a small, independent business run by myself, Louise Knight-Richardson - Bookbinder, Designer and Maker from the South Coast of England.

Brought up on the South Coast of the UK, I'm a happy girl who is equally at home in the city as I am in the woods. Formally trained in Fashion and Clothing Design and a self taught photographer, I set up my little business to sell handmade items and have somehow found myself binding books. Let me elaborate - Jackdaw Bindery is a small, independent business run by myself, Louise Knight-Richardson -

Bookbinder, Designer and Maker from the South Coast of England. Predominantly I bind leather journals for artists, writers, composers and dreamers. I take photographs of all sorts of pretty things. I like to rummage for treasure and rescue forgotten textiles, creating gowns adorned with remnants of the past. Please note: All sales from Dearest Jackdaw (Jackdaw Bindery and What the Jackdaw Saw) are subject to UK legislation.

I would love to know how you would use a journal this tiny? The thing I love most about these teeny pendants is that they’re fully functional little journals 😍 Each page measures a mere 1” x 3/4”! The paper is handmade using t-shirt cuttings and is suitable for sketching, drawing and printmaking - providing you have small enough tools 😅

I needed a little pick-me-up and figured the perfect thing! Little dopamine embroidery 😍❤️ ...

My favourite season is here and it’s making me so happy 🧡 I’ve been playing around with new ideas and these little leaf vein embroideries are my new fave. Each one is marked freehand directly onto the leather before carefully hand-stitching the design into the cover using thread that matches the binding on the spine. I will be adding these to the shop very soon, but if you’d like to order before that just send me a DM either here or via Etsy and I can work on something magical for you ✨🍄🍁🔥🍂🌙

It’s been a while since I last posted on my socials. Inspiration seems to ebb and flow for me and I really dislike the feeling that I have to always be sharing content when platforms make it feel so forced to squish yourself into the algorithmn. Does anyone else get that?

I took some journals into the garden earlier this week to shoot some long awaited pics for instagram and surprised myself with a 4 hour painting session in the sunshine instead. Those are the best creative endeavours, the completely unplanned ones - I find it so difficult to carve out time for myself and on this particular day things just fell into place and felt like the first time in months that I fully switched off and did something just for me. Even if it was a bit off-track from the original task!

More photos coming but I wanted to share this spread because these paints are 👌 They’re handmade by Gillian and I am fully obsessed - the granulation marries perfectly with the texture of the cotton-rag paper. I made myself this shetchbook a few weeks ago and have finally started using it, I’m really looking forward to filling the pages with colour. 🌈

Happy Tuesday! It’s been a little while since I posted on Instagram but it’s been a nice break. I’ve been busy making lots of stock for and my Etsy and folksy shops have had a long overdue colour update for spring - my fave new shades are forest and leafling green, perfect for spring 🌸🍃☀️swipe to see my updated chart and those fresh new greens👌
