A lovely couple of days spent with the boss!!
Quality control, Regulator making, reed fiddling and new chanters etc....
And a drop of the Irish Whiskey, some splendid cake from Jon Turton and plenty of brews in between. Couldnt be better, always a pleasure 🙏🎶

Bellows making before the the boss turns up tonight...
Can't beat a handplane for revealing woods hidden beauties!
One of my favorite jobs is sharpening the planes and getting to work with them.. no noisy machines just the swoosh of the shavings flying out of the planes.

Finally back to work after a long summer, some festivals and a mad run around the country to secure supplys of the ever increasingly difficult to obtain materials for making the pipes..
Eventually got what I needed and following a dose of the flu or whatever it was, some log splitting and some roof maintainance for the bad weather am back at the bench catching up... always too much to be getting done!!
Anyway, on with some chanters, keys and springs...

Well hello all.. Has been an age since I have posted anything here but I am still alive and kicking..
Things have been very busy in the workshop the last year so I have been mostly just getting on with the job of making pipes.
After finishing this set in Castella boxwood and artificial Ivory I was asked to share it by a few folks.. so for your benefit and that of the lovely customer here she is.
A few decorative additions to suit the customer and a week adjusting and fitting it to him and its off out into the world to make music.

And now for a week or so off for the summer!!
Hope you are all keeping well and look forward to a few tunes when we meet here and there.

Another little project that has been sitting in the cupboard awaiting some TLC... A Kennet tool and cutter grinder.
It needed some slight modifications to allow diamond wheels to be installed which I finally got around to doing over the weekend.
Seems to be working rarther well and certainly makes a great job of the tooling for the metal lathe and milling machine. Hopefully screw cutting tooling will be a breeze on this and god knows what else.
One more machine fixed up and off the fix it list!

Pretty happy with the new coaxial bore clock gadget! Made quick work of indicating the hole on the mill table to within a few microns..(Will post a video of it spinning about in a moment)
Sometimes small Mills can be a bit of a pain to clamp things down and space can be a bit tight.. Not had something this awkward for a while but just managed to fit it on with a millimeter to spare!
Hopefully the thing works as intended after all this faff and a few hours lost.. Nothing ventured nothing gained as they say...

These will hopefully end up as the thimble joints for the bass drone lower sections. Fingers crossed all goes well with the silver soldering job next 🤞
Hopefully I won't have to make any more for a while after this lot is finished!!!

The making of custom threaded parts.. yet another job that is best suited to production in a reasonable quantity. Whilst the machines are set up it's better to make a load at the same time.
These will be 36 cheese headed screws for the bass drone clamps. They secure the lower parts of the bass drone together and allow easy maintenance with everything able to come apart at a later date.
I could probably buy them ready made but where's the fun in that! Nothing else is bought in ready made so might as well include the screws with that too....

While I continue drilling and reaming away... here's another instalment of a key making marathon I did a couple of months ago for the chanters posted a couple of days back...
Glad that's out of the way but probably won't be long before I have to do it all over again!

Well after saying my current job was a bit boring.. they did take a good picture..
These are mainstocks which have been seasoning away for a good while and I am now in the process of reaming the holes to final diameter. They tend to go very slightly oval so a little tinkering usually restores the holes to their rightful circularity... or roundness if you prefer that term.
With drones and full set orders awaiting I will be needing a few of these so best crack on with them!
Various different timbers.. Castella boxwood, Cocobolo, African Leadwood, Bolivian Rosewood, and English Cherry.
