We've had such an amazing couple of days representing Riese & Müller at Keswick Mountain Festival. It's great to chat with so many people who want to use an e-bike for more of their daily journeys. (And a decent number who already are!)

Our Load 60 cargo bike with family pack has probably drawn the most attention, with lots of little ones jumping in to try out the front seats.

The Basil Buddy has all also drawn lots of interest. Thanks to the MIK compatibility of all R&M's bikes, these nifty dog carriers can be attached to more or less every bike in the range. Pablo, our head of accessories, has been very happily demonstrating the comfort and utility of these excellent baskets.

We're back at the festival for one more day so if you fancy a coffee and a chat about cargo bikes/electric bikes, come and say hello!

Everyone asks me how much they should spend on an e-bike. It's the wrong question.

The right question is: what do I need it to do?
A £500 bike that ends up in the shed is the most expensive bike you'll ever buy. A £3,000 bike ridden every day for ten years works out at pennies per mile.

Start with how you're going to use it – then find the bike that fits that life.

Cycling to work can literally save your life.

A major UK study of over 250,000 commuters found that people who cycle to work have a 41% lower risk of dying from any cause. A 52% lower risk of dying from heart disease. And a 45% lower risk of developing cancer. And a separate study found they're 20% less likely to be prescribed medication for anxiety or depression.

The best bit is you don't have to cycle the whole way – even part of the journey makes a difference. That's where e-bikes come in.

If you want to feel better, live longer, and actually enjoy your commute – get pedalling.

There seems to be a lot of confusion around about which types of e-bike are legal. But the law in the UK is very clear, legal e-bikes are officially known as EAPCs. This stands for 'electrically assisted pedal cycle', and these bikes are restricted to 15.5mph, with a 250W motor, and no throttle. You have to be at least 14 to ride one, but these bikes are legally treated the same as regular bicycles, and can use all the same cycle lanes etc.

With a few very specific exceptions, any other e-bike you see on the road is effectively an illegal motorbike.

While the police and authorities have been quite slow to start actually enforcing the rules, things have noticeably changed recently and they're now taking action and seizing illegal e-bikes and e-scooters.

As an E-Bike Positive shop, we only sell and service legal e-bikes.

Bike theft isn't inevitable. While there's no 100% guaranteed way of stopping your bike getting stolen, there are several things you can do to make it much less likely.

A vital part of this is to use a good quality lock, ideally one that is explicitly designed to be angle grinder resistant. While certifications like "Sold Secure Diamond" might be enough for your insurers, it's worth going another level up to these top tier locks.

There's a pervasive idea that using an e-bike is somehow cheating. If you're in a race where e-bikes are banned, yes: that's cheating. Otherwise, in what way is an e-bike a cheat? And why don't we apply the same logic to those who opt to drive by car instead of cycle by bike or e-bike?

Driving a car might be a cheat, riding an e-bike definitely isn't.

Can you replace your car with a bike? Perhaps not for every journey, but possibly more than half of them. In the UK, 60% of car trips are under 5 miles. Making these journeys by bike instead means not having to pay for parking, getting some exercise and seeing more of the world!

And electric cargo bikes make it easier than ever to do the school run, the weekly shop, or carry any other bulky items you might need to move from A to B. If you'd like to take one for a test ride, drop us a message.
