👌👇💞
20 years of campaigning and 5 years of formal negotiations, we have reached an historic moment!
The new High Seas Treaty aimed at protecting life in international waters is finally open for signatures by nation states! 66 nations have already signed since the opening in New York yesterday. 🎉
Given everything going on in the world and with the triple crisis of the climate emergency, biodiversity loss and global pollution, this new treaty is an opportunity for governments to pull together and protect our common heritage for the sake of all our futures, human and all others. The High Seas make up half our planet! 🌎
This milestone has been no small feat. I am proud and humbled to have played a part in this achievement.
I am even prouder that W4O is a member of The High Seas Alliance. An Alliance made up of strong, dedicated and highly skilled professional ocean protectors from around the world. None of this would have been possible without the passionate people both past and present that make up this Alliance!
Onward for the ocean! This treaty will only serve its purpose through effective implementation and enforcement.
We will continue to campaign for the protection of our collective ocean! 💙🌊✊🏽
Congratulations and thank you to everyone that has been a part of this journey! Thank you also to Yaris Ng Pang who joined the happenings in New York this week on behalf of W4O.
