This customer violin was in much need of some love. The list is long…

- Soundpost crack repair which transpired to start from a filled section of the plate (covered by black retouch) where a worm had been. This created a weakness and a starting point for the crack. We removed the filler, fitted a shaving and patch behind it.

- Rib shortening was required around the top ribs. No photos for this one unfortunately but we were able to salvage the top block and re-fit (photo shown)

- The platform needed a fair bit of TLC (patches etc.) from where the belly had been removed in the past and not properly restored

- Lots of Edges and corners!!

- Neck reset as it was crooked and the elevation was down at 23mm

This one took some time but we were very happy with the results, both visually and tonally

Children’s musical education is very important to us, and it’s been sad to see the repeated cuts to services and opportunities for instrument learning in recent years. Music festivals and competitions can play such an important role for young players and they offer invaluable performance experience and help to build confidence. Another post from the recent work archive. It was a pleasure to work on this beautiful “Old Forster” cello.

The poorly shaped Romberg was reworked to a flatter profile which felt much better in the hand and the neck was refinished. We carved a new Belgian Bridge and fitted a new sound post. Lastly the cello had a thorough clean and some of the thirsty edges and sections of ribs were retouched.

Another crack repair! The varnish needed some TLC too.

Christopher King 1942-2026

It is with great sadness that I announce the passing of my father Chris, the founder of Cardiff Violins.

Chris served the string players of Wales, Britain and beyond for over 40 years. He created job opportunities for many players and luthiers over his time building Cardiff Violins, and is the reason we are all here today. He was an incredible craftsman, a true creative, and a problem solver completely unaccepting of the impossible.

He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He passed peacefully surrounded by his loved ones.

If you would like to pay your respects a ceremony will be held at Thornhill Crematorium on Friday 27th of February 2026 at 12 pm.
