An unusual imported piano pitch raised and tuned to Broadwood temperament.

Pitch raising this Chappell resulted in a broken string repaired with a successful splice. A fine English piano, better than a Bechstein.

Very flat but very nice Chappell pitch raised to 442 Ellis’ Broadwood best temperament to bring out better resonance. The hammers are quite worn at the top end but no broken strings and reasonable tuning pins.

Unnamed piano with many broken strings. The previous tuner must have been Frank Spencer??? Tuning pins too loose and very flat so tuned at the prevailing pitch over a semitone flat. It wasn’t the worst I’ve heard at the end but check out those coils! (Not mine)

A return to this Brinsmead overdamper. One thing I like about this piano are the hammer fl**ge screws on the back of the action rather than the front. Much easier to get the hammers out. A few notes have moth eaten felts.

Attractive pedals but a difficult instrument with previous broken strings and flat hammers. Tuned unequally to take advantage of the (rather good) overdamper system

An Emil Dresser German upright. A lot of work to do changing loose centres and light refacing. Finished with an unequal tuning which will bring out the best harmonics. The piano did not sound good at all in Equal Temperament and had no resonance.

Adjusting the damper stop rail on this Bechstein to prevent them going up too far on the pedal.

A lovely little Knight piano in a city church. Not tuned for 5 years and still at concert pitch.

A stunning straight strung Brinsmead with one of their tapeless actions restored about 40 years ago. A shame the action is a bit sticky but a very attractive piano with a good mellow tone.
