Traditional Values in a Modern Setting

The history of Bury Market dates back to the 15th Century and a Market Charter granted by King Henry VI, but the current site occupied since the 1970’s has everything a modern shopper would expect. On the Full Market Days of Wednesday, Friday and Saturday the Market is home to over 350 stalls selling all manner of goods and produce and when combined with t

he neighbouring Mill Gate and nearby Rock Shopping Centres, Bury offers a fantastic array of shops and leisure activities which has seen the Town’s retail offer ranked as one of the Top 10 in the whole of the North West. Bury Market has received many plaudits over the years and most recently was awarded ‘Coach Friendly Shopping Destination of the Year 2014’ in the National Coach Tourism Awards. A theme that is reflected in all the awards is the diverse nature of the stalls, the friendly and knowledgeable service of the traders, and the quality of the management of the site and the facilities on offer. The Market’s stalls are mainly undercover and sell everything from exotic indulgences and special treats to day-to-day necessities. The Market is all on one level and accessible to all with disabled facilities centrally located in the modern Market Hall. Since its construction the Market has benefited from ongoing investment from Bury Council and now provides a traditional market shopping experience in a thoroughly modern setting. Many people have written about the market – but a good account of a visit can be found by reading Stuart Maconie’s book “Pies and Prejudice – In Search of the North”, in which he talks about the best deli he’s ever seen, and much more besides. As a taste, here’s one quote from his book in which he introduces the reader to the Market:

“Five minutes’ walk from Bury station is a shoppers’ Mecca, a retail nirvana rich with exotic bargains, a fabled bazaar, a veritable souk of the north. Come with me to Bury Market.”

Throughout the year the Market has a variety of events and activities that further add to its character including Food & Craft Markets, Community Farm Animals, Birds of Prey Roadshows, Stilt Walkers and much more. Whilst a full day can be spent on the Market visitors to the Town Centre can also take in the Fusiliers Museum, Met Theatre or East Lancs Railway to add a cultural element to their trip. The Market website www.burymarket.com is a good source of information for anybody planning a visit to the Market or alternatively the Market Office is open 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday and can be contacted on 0161 253 6520.
