Carmy Love is one of the preeminent voices on the UK soul scene. Having sung with Cool Million, Charles and House Gospel Choir, and as an original member of New Street Adventure, she embarked upon a solo career in 2021 with a run of singles for the Big AC label. Her track ‘Thinkin’ About You’ featured on the Acid Jazz Totally Wired compilation last year.

PM Warson is described as ‘one of the leading lights of the modern R&B scene’ by Shindig! Magazine, with three records under his belt with Légère Recordings, and extensive live and international touring experience over the last 5 years. A true ‘60s stylist, he founded FYND with the support of Dean and Ed at Acid Jazz in 2024 as an outlet for his authentic and original R&B/Soul productions.

A thrilling new collaboration on wax, as Carmy soars over the driving A-side ‘You Gotta Understand’, backed by an infectious guitar riff, horns and a driving rhythm section. For the flip, she takes us into deep soul territory, with Southern-styled ballad ‘Thinking Of Leaving’. They’ve done it right: an essential for retro-classic soul fans.

A. JOHN SIMMONS – AIN’T NOTHING LIKE THE LOVE
It’s 1978, New York City and John Simmons (of the ’70s group The Reflections) and Phillip Ballou (from Revelation) and David Nathan — writing full time for Blues & Soul as the US correspondent — pool resources to create a demo for Phillip’s planned solo record deal. “Ain’t Nothing Like The Love” is our prime track.
Sadly nothing happens with it. However, in 1981 John records his own version which found a release on a tiny Michigan indie label Sabrina. Years later, long after it had been forgotten it becomes a much-sought-after rare modern soul 45 in the UK commanding prices of a $1,000 and more!. Finally, 47 years after it was written, a hidden gem is getting its props as a modern day Philly-flavoured soul classic!
B. PHILLIP BALLOU – WE’LL BE TOGETHER
As part of a four-song recording session in 1978 at a small Manhattan studio, John Simmons and Phillip Ballou, both singers with New York-based groups — The Reflections and Revelation respectively, team up with British music journalist David Nathan to create a demo for Phillip as he steps out into launching what he hopes will be a solo career.
in truth, the recordings were far more than demos, more like finished masters, with full arrangements, a rhythm and string sections. David presents them to a few labels but no one bites. He plays all four songs to renowned hitmaker Thom Bell who is sufficiently impressed that he works out a publishing deal, but again, nothing happens.
Phillip goes on to tour with the likes of James Taylor and Luther Vandross: with Luther, Phillip is heard on sessions with Aretha Franklin, Dionne Warwick and on Luther’s own successful albums. Thoughts of a solo career vanish…
But great recordings survive and in 2026, “We’ll Be Together” (one of the songs from the 1978 session, written and produced by Phillip, John and David) has been revitalized as part of Charly Records’ relaunch of the famed Soul City label (which David Nathan started originally with Dave Godin and Robert Blackmore in 1968). Roy Roberts was born in Livingston, Tennessee, in 1942, and spent his formative years as a farmhand listening to blues and saving up for his first guitar. He was inspired to become a professional musician after after seeing Northern Soul legend Jerry Butler performing and before long, he began backing up major artists who came through town such as Solomon Burke, Eddie Floyd, Stevie Wonder, Dee Clark and Otis Redding – a formidable CV!

He cut his first record, a tribute to Otis Redding, in 1968 which found a release on the local Bo Ro label before being picked up by Nina Simon for Ninandy Records, co-owned by her and her husband Andy Stroud. The flip side, “Got Have Your Love”, overlooked at the time, was adopted by the Northern Soul scene and remains a much-loved dancer. Roberts followed this success with a string of singles that carried him well into the 1970s including the sublime rarity “I Know What To Do To Satisfy You” released on producer Curtiss Moore’s Tina label. But, waiting in the wings, was his ultimate funk/soul classic “You Move Me” recorded in 1971 for Lelan Rogers’ Nashville based House Of The Fox. Rogers (brother of country star Kenny Rogers) also controlled the Silver Fox label and unleashed a tonne of funk by the likes of Maceo And All The Kings Men, Gloria Taylor, Brightlights, the Soul Lifters and our choice-cut by the Roy Roberts Experience, currently in-demand and tearing up the dance floors.- Charly Records

Los Angeles brothers Tommy (aka Buster) and Eddie Williams sang in many different groups but only had a handful of releases as a duo or as solo artists.
‘Can’t Be Still’ is their best-known track after being belatedly spun at Wigan Casino in the mid-70s. It became a ‘monster sound’ and was subsequently re-pressed from the original record plates to satisfy demand. It is now considered a classic northern oldie from the golden era
The flip ‘There I Was’ is more of an up-tempo harmony pop record than a soul number. Despite its pop sensibility, it has picked up many admirers over the decades and is highly regarded among collectors.

Originally scheduled for 2023, two ballads from the GWP stable to fill the gap that has frustrated more than a few collectors.
The top side is from the unknown Modettes, who were a George Kerr-produced group with an exceptional lead singer. The lady lets her emotions run loose, bemoaning the ill-advisedness of her recent relationship.

The Shaladons are another mystery entity who recorded three excellent songs for Larry Banks at GWP productions, before that label was launched. It is a great sweet soul interpretation of Banks’ song ‘Showdown’ that was a highlight of the first “Dave Godin’s Deep Soul Treasures” CD – Ace Records

“I Can See the Love” and “Joy for Me and My Baby” come from previously unreleased demo master tapes. By the time these tracks were recorded, the group had already released two promotional 45s: “All My Life/I’m A Loner” on the Nu-ron Label and “Disco Hustle/Can’t Do Enough Girl” on the Stage Art label. Soul Direction Records has now been given the privilege by Manny Campbell and The Nu’Rons to release these tracks on vinyl. Today,
The Nu’Rons were a family group made up of two sets of brothers and cousins: brothers Daryl and Raymond Gibson, along with Otho and Charles Bateman. All of them were born and raised in Salem, New Jersey. They began singing together at the ages of ten and eleven, eventually adding a fifth member, their brother Rudolph Gibson, to form a group called The Gospel 5. As teenagers, they decided to cross over to secular music. Known for their energetic dance routines, they adopted the name “The Nu’Rons,” inspired by the word “neuron,” which refers to a cell that transmits nerve impulses.
The Nu’Rons continue to work and record as a trio, following the passing of Raymond Gibson. Group Members: Daryl Howard Gibson (aka “The Loner”) Raymond Gibson (aka “The Nasty Man”) Passed away in 2005 Otho Bateman (aka “O.B.”) Charles Bateman (aka “Biggy Rat”) Rudolph Gibson (Pre Nu’Rons) Charles Bateman (OB’s brother and cousin to Raymond/ Daryl) passed away in 2022.
