I waited two years for this next edition in the summer suspense mystery series and it was worth the wait. A blend of mystery, crime and romance all whipped up together to create a great beach (or train in my case!) read. Set in Cornwall Bryher returns to her home town after living in London and having her heart broken. She returns and creates a new restaurant but on the opening night a tragedy at sea occurs and she’s called out as an RNLI volunteer and her life does a 360!
Is the man pulled from the sea her dashing ex lover? Only time will tell
It’s light, it’s funny, it’s gripping. I think I’d have liked more menace from bryhers mother as she was obviously an arch villain but it was a fun read. LJ Ross

I loved this latest George Cross book, I love his character and the somewhat exasperated colleagues he works with! Set in Bristol, a tailor is murdered on the Bristol train to London. An unexpected unraveling of the crime ending in a fabulous crescendo. I’ve only read the last two in this series and really feel I should go back to meet George at the beginning because his character is so good. The subtlety of those around him and their changes whilst he remains quite rigid is one of the best parts of the stories. This one has totally fondness running through it. The attention to detail of the tailoring matched the book selling of the last. Simply a brilliant read thats unputdownable. Crime Novelist

My slump is over!! From the writer of Broadchurch a sequel to the brilliant Death at the White Hart.
We meet the wonderful DI Nicola (not Nic!) Bridge and her sidekick DC Harry Ward at a holiday park in rural Dorset where there’s a co**se rolling the wave machine in the swimming pool!
I loved that we got to know more about Nicola in this book and how she ‘works’ in this book , it was a gripping page turner that until the very last page I had no idea who the murderer was. Clever, gritty, dry humour and unputdownable, I loved it. More please! 📚

Ooh this reading slump has been massive! It’s taken me a full month to read this book, stoping at 200 pages for two weeks then picking it back up. I felt invested but it really was an anxious book, anxious family driving home in an AI supported car, kills a family in an accident, was it the car, was it their son? Who owns the accident.
The mum is a genius with OCD, spends her entire time fretting about safety or creating new algorithms for AI whilst her husband analyses her, the kids, himself.
They go on holiday to get over the crash straight into another AI spirited disaster where their son and girlfriend drift in a boat in a storm, found by drones but then repercussions.
Lots of information about what lies ahead/is happening now with drones killing people, learning to swarm, facial recognition, and how much we don’t know or understand. Turns out the wife works secretly for the military. Ug anxious making novel.

The book group were an absolute hoot this month! One member had us all snorting with laughter with her savage review of Agatha Raisin books (she read six to make sure she didn’t like them!) she told us they irritated her which was so not like her!
I had to explain that a book that was saucy is now called spicy which they thought was funny. One member told he was 100 pages into his book and he had no idea what it was about.
We chatted about Sir Walter Raleigh and his fall from Grace with Queen Elizabeth 1st beheading him.
Which lead to one member pulling another’s leg that Budleigh Salterton is a den of iniquity. We were all having such a laugh. Much hilarity and cheeky conversation. 🌶️🌶️🌶️

I really like Joanna Cannons writing, she has a way of layering and revealing as the story unfolds. This is the story of Margaret and Derek and the sudden disappearance of their eleven year old daughter Jeanie.
As Margaret struggles with the loss of Derek, an unlikely visitor appears to her and helps to mend the forty years of grief and sadness since Jeanie’s disappearance.
I was immediately taken to the disappearance of Jeanette Tate because Jeanie was doing her paper round and only her bike was found, just like Jeanette.
Cannon writes human nature so well, the lies we keep, the secrets buried, assumptions and hidden details that are in plain sight. I really enjoyed it and won’t give away the visitor or the ending but an uplifting if heart wrenching tale. Jo Cannon

I seem to have been on a roll of books with a similar theme which frankly I really didn’t need right now. The Irish Goodbye is about an extremely messy family who have all come together for thanks giving.
The loss of their brother and guilt is the root cause of so much that’s unsaid, bubbling away and erupting at various points in the story but for me it was chaotic and I often lost who belonged to who and who was an adult and who was a child.
It works its way to a crescendo at the thanksgiving meal (as these things do!) I found myself irritated with one of the characters and wished someone would call her out (she seems drunk most of the time and is haphazardly looking after her kids) which also made me feel judgy.
Well written and if you like family drama then this is for you but the themes at play were just not for me right now. Now please universe let my next book bring some cheer!

I enjoyed this cosy crime light read set near Beachy Head. Pat is a psychotherapist who suddenly finds herself embroiled in a murder of one of her clients. Fun, frivolous and eccentric, it was a nice antidote to some of my more recent reads!

This achingly moving anthology of poems by the beautiful soul that is Kit Birks who is on the last leg of her walking the entire length of Europe. Please not only read (and buy!) her poetry but follow her on these last days of her walk which is for su***de prevention charities. She is a gentle, but strong soul who has fought so many battles on and off this walk, a truly inspiring young woman. Her writing made me read poetry (a very rare thing) and moved me immensely. Also, please support her by donating to her charities and you should feature her amazing story. ***deprevention

I enjoyed this crime novel, but it lost its way for me mid book (it might have been me of course!) the premise of the dead person helping the policeman fell short too as he kind of lurked or sulked at random moments in the plot. I did however love the character of Laurie, dealing with a difficult family situation with ghosts of her own and I liked Joe who had survived drowning a bus crash as a child. The ending unexpected but not really tied up alongside other suggestions. A bit of a slow burn but I’m hoping if it’s going to be a series that this carries on in the next book. Not a terrible read just dry in places and a bit tangled. But I love a good crime novel so will look out for the next installment no doubt!
