On Friday 2nd October, we held our third Community Champion Awards, celebrating those individuals, groups and services in the sector who go above and beyond for their community.
Our Climate and Environment Champion award was awarded to Duncan Kenny (represented by Holly Jarrett), on behalf of The Cove Discovery Project.
The Cove Discovery Project is a volunteer-led Community Interest Company based in Brixham, dedicated to protecting Torbay’s marine environment and increasing awareness of its unique wildlife, habitats and geology. Through conservation activities, research, education and community engagement, the project helps people develop a deeper understanding of the natural environment on their doorstep and the importance of protecting it for future generations.
Their work is strengthened through valuable partnerships with organisations including the National Marine Aquarium in Plymouth, with whom they undertake seagrass survey dives in Torbay, and the English Riviera UNESCO Global Geopark, supporting initiatives that celebrate and promote Torbay’s exceptional geology and marine biodiversity.
Education is at the heart of the project. The project delivers programmes for local primary and secondary schools, as well as university students, providing engaging opportunities to learn through presentations, workshops and practical experiences. They are committed to ensuring these opportunities remain accessible to all schools and, wherever possible, free of charge.
To help generate sustainable income to support our educational and conservation activities, The Cove Discovery Project launched an organic clothing brand in 2024. This has since developed into a successful high-street shop on Fore Street in Brixham, which not only helps fund the project but has also become a community hub for conservation, environmental awareness and the promotion of local independent businesses.
Through this combination of conservation, education, community engagement and social enterprise, the Cove Discovery Project is creating a positive and lasting impact across Torbay.

Their contribution spans every aspect of our work, from running the shop and supporting day-to-day operations, to designing educational programmes, undertaking survey dives and delivering engaging presentations.
“Thanks to the time, skills and enthusiasm of our volunteers, we have been able to reach thousands of young people across Torbay, providing opportunities to learn about and connect with their local marine environment through presentations, creative workshops and field trips. Inspiring young people and creating a positive, lasting impact on their understanding and appreciation of the marine environment is at the heart of our organisation, and our volunteers make this possible.”
