Shapeshifting, collaborative, endlessly inventive and robustly empowering: Black music has transformed British culture and society, and gifted generations of Black Britons a powerful means to reject misrepresentation and find freedom and joy in sound.

From the height of jungle and hip-hop in the 90s to the London uprisings in 2011, the birth of UK trap and the rise of grime superstars like Stormzy, filmmaker and DJ Jesse Bernard examines how Black culture in Britain is moulded by creativity drawn from Lagos and Los Angeles, Sao Paolo and South London. Escaping Babylon takes a deep dive into the history of Black British music to celebrate its richness, heritage and towering legacy.

Jesse will be in conversation with Omar McCutcheon (AKA Batu) here at bookhaus.
Batu is a DJ, producer and owner of the Timedance record label, based in Bristol (UK)!

Join us for the launch of Hazel Sheffield's fascinating new book: Frontierlands are Britain's forgotten places. Silt-filled harbours, overgrown forests, sunken railway tracks and empty buildings. All once economic engines, now abandoned by investors and the state. But they are home to local communities, and amongst them, some remarkable pioneers working together to repair, rebuild and prepare for the future.

Hazel will be joined by Jess Prendergrast (Onion Collective) and Melissa Mean (WeCanMake) to discuss reimagining abandoned and neglected places in Bristol and the South West.
