After a tough growing season, we’re finally getting the potatoes out of the ground. The brutal heat and dry conditions have certainly tested the crop this year, but despite it all, we’ve had a pretty decent crop.

There’s something special about digging up a crop that’s been growing away all summer, knowing that these potatoes will see us through the cold wintery months to come and may even end up on our Christmas dinners!

It’s been a tough growing year.

The long dry spells and relentless heat have asked a lot of the garden, and of the people tending it. Not everything has grown quite as we hoped, and there have been plenty of moments when we’ve had to adapt, rethink and simply work with what the season has given us.

But then there are mornings like today. Amelia and Danni out harvesting for this week’s veg boxes, surrounded by great stands of kale and carrying crates of beautiful celery and sweetcorn. Some crops are still looking, and more importantly tasting, absolutely amazing.

Farming has a habit of keeping you humble. One crop struggles while another seems completely unfazed, and even in a difficult year the garden keeps producing things to feel very grateful for.

These will be making their way into veg boxes and onto the farm shop shelves this week, fresh from the field.

Our little green farm shop is looking wonderfully bountiful this Sunday.

Despite the long dry spell, the shelves are full of good things to eat. There’s plenty of fresh organic fruit for snacking, colourful salad ingredients for light lunches, easy options for summer suppers and, of course, the all important ice cream.

Much of what you’ll find has been grown right here on the farm, alongside organic produce and food from other brilliant local growers and producers.

We’re open until 8pm today, so whether you’re stocking up for the week, putting together an easy Sunday supper or passing by in need of something cold, come and see what’s on the shelves. Find us on Google Maps.

Good food, grown and made close to home.

After watching the eclipse out on the moor, we gathered in part of the herd who have been grazing out there, ready for their TB test tomorrow. A rather beautiful end to the day, with a slightly less enjoyable job waiting for us in the morning. Keeping everything crossed for a clear test 🤞

The grass is getting scarce in this hot, dry summer, so we’ve been supplementing the sheep’s diet with freshly cut willow branches.

Willow is packed with nutrients and gives them a valuable boost when other grazing is scare, helping keep the girls in good condition and build their strength ahead of going in with our ram. We’ve certainly had to adapt and make the most of what’s around us this season, but we take pride in giving our livestock a diverse range of forage in these challenging times.

This is what summer looks like in a veg box.

Beetroot pulled from the soil, handfuls of beans, courgettes that grow while our backs are turned, beautiful fennel, crisp salad and the tomatoes we have carefully tended all year.

At this point in the season the garden is in full swing and every week brings a slightly different harvest. That is one of the things we love about our veg boxes. You get to follow the season with us, eating what is growing well and abundant right now.

But a veg box is about much more than vegetables.
It gives us a direct connection with the people eating the food we grow. We know who we are growing for and hear what you have cooked, what the kids unexpectedly loved and occasionally what left you wondering what on earth to do with it. In return, your commitment gives us the confidence to sow, plant and plan for the months ahead.

That relationship feels particularly important in a summer like this. Farmers and growers across the country are feeling the effects of prolonged heat and drought, with concerns about smaller harvests and rising food prices.

We feel those pressures here too. Some crops thrive, others struggle, but diversity gives us resilience. Our veg box prices are set for the season and rather than shrinking the box when one crop becomes scarce or expensive, we fill it with what the garden is giving us.
In abundant weeks, you share in the abundance. In difficult ones, your commitment gives us the security to keep growing.

It is a simple relationship between grower, soil and eater, and one we think matters more than ever.

Look closely and you might spot a film crew from Imperial College London.

Last week we welcomed three talented young documentary makers to Real Food Garden as they spent a couple of days capturing what regenerative farming looks like in practice. From the market garden and our home farm, to gathering our English Longhorn cattle at Chark Moor, they joined us every step of the way.

Chark Moor is a site we graze on behalf of the Gaia Trust where our cattle play an important role in restoring habitats and improving biodiversity. It was wonderful to share not just what we do, but why we do it.

The team discovered us while looking for female farmers in Cornwall through Instagram. Along with a handful of other Cornish farmers, we are featured in their Masters project exploring regenerative farming and the people behind it.

We loved their thoughtful questions, their curiosity and the fresh perspective they brought. It reminded us how powerful it can be to step back and tell the story of farming through someone else's eyes.

The team hopes this project will become a short documentary that can be shared more widely, and we cannot wait to see the finished film. It is a real privilege to have the opportunity to share our story and help more people discover what regenerative farming can achieve.
