The emotional side of having an ostomy can be just as unpredictable as the physical side — and everyone copes differently. Some struggle, some adapt, and some find comfort in humour.

Bryony, one of our incredible advocates, recently shared a powerful reflection on body confidence, not focusing on appearance, but on the amazing things our bodies do for us.

"Our bodies carry us through illness, recovery, laughter, heartbreak and every moment in between. They adapt, they heal and they keep going—even when life feels unpredictable.

Living with a stoma can change your relationship with your body. But sometimes, the greatest shift comes when we stop focusing on appearance and start recognising the incredible work our bodies do every single day.

It’s easy sometimes to talk badly about our own bodies. Whether we have been through health challenges, traumatic events, or simply don’t think parts of ourselves look how we want them to. So we asked our advocates to rewrite the script – turning harsh words they’ve said about their bodies and rewriting them with kindness.

“I hate my stomach” became “It gave me two boys.”

And “My body is unlovable” became “My body has allowed me to recover from surgery and has got me through it.”

This is a reminder that a body that has been through illness and major operations isn’t just surviving, it’s showing incredible strength.
