A call-out to Abbey turned into one of those days that reminds you why this work is worth doing.

We had three time windows to install a hire instrument while the pipe organ was wrapped up for building works. By 4.30 pm the job was done. By 6.00 pm we were sitting in the nave for evensong with a choir of nearly 40 voices in red cassocks and a Bach trio sonata to close.

The pipe organ at Sherborne has a history going back to the Great Exhibition of 1851. It has been rebuilt more than once and is in outstanding condition. Worth a visit on its own.

Do you know someone who has always been curious about the organ? This is worth sharing with them.

Dr. Carol Williams - Composer, Conductor, Concert Organist, has launched Dr. Carol's Organ Academy on YouTube. The playlist now runs to 19 videos, filmed on on of our Viscount Ensign 51-FV which we sent to her.

It starts right at the beginning, with the early videos explaining what an organ is, how pipes make sound, and how to set the instrument up to play. From there it builds steadily, covering pedal technique, hymn playing, repertoire ideas and more. Video 19 even tackles an AC/DC pedal workout, which gives you a sense of the range on offer.

Whether someone you know is a complete beginner or has just started exploring the instrument, this Organ Academy playlist gives them a easy, friendly place to start. Tag them in the comments below.

Organ Hire for Sherborne Abbey

In the end of April we received a call from the Director of Music at Sherborne Abbey, wanting to know if we could provide an instrument for long-term hire within a week.

The Abbey was having some internal building work (moving the vestry to create a new internal toilet block) which necessitated the repositioning (stone-by-stone) of the tomb of Sir John Horsey. The tomb is very close to the pipe organ and the work would create huge amounts of stone dust which would get inside the organ. Therefore, it is necessary to cover the organ in plastic sheeting for protection, which means it will be out of action for a number of months.

After a meeting, it was decided our three manual, 50 stop Envoy 350-FV would be suitable for the job in hand.

Fortunately, all went like clockwork, with the organ installation.

Our team arriving at 10am in the morning. By mid-day, the organ was in situ, speakers on the choir stall roofs, all wired up and tested. A mammoth task in such a short time, but made very much easier by the excellent team at the Abbey who helped with cabling routes and supplied copious amounts of tea and biscuits.

It's always a joy to receive a testimonial 🎹

This is what James Lally, the organist at All Saints Church in Chedgrave says:

🗣️ "After our previous organ failed dramatically and could not be repaired, Chedgrave PCC investigated the replacement options most thoroughly. It was decided to get a digital instrument.

We approached Viscount Classical organs in Bicester. The Lay Chaiman of the PCC, myself and a member of the congregation visited Viscount, and were warmly greeted and our needs evaluated.

We were taken to the demonstration studio where we could see and play various instruments. One organ stood out as being suitable for our musical needs and the costs were achievable. Permission to purchase from the diocese followed without any problem.

After the organ was delivered, it was voiced and balanced to suit the size of the church and its acoustics. The whole process was dealt with in a very pleasant and professional manner.

Our congregation is thrilled with the Ensign 42-FV, the quality of sound is very realistic and even pleases me, a dyed in the wool pipe organist, I am delighted with it."

A year in the planning and delivered just in time for Holy Week.

Our recent installation at St Mary’s Horncastle saw the replacement of a long-serving Makin organ with a Viscount Regent 361, designed to suit both the building and the needs of the choir. With 18 audio channels and a carefully considered speaker layout, the result is a clear and balanced sound throughout the church.

This was a fast-moving project with a tight deadline, but thanks to a great team effort, the instrument was ready exactly when it needed to be.

Ian Tafano found himself in the position to purchase himself an organ for his home practice and left us this wonderful testimonial.

If you find yourself in the fortunate position to get yourself an instrument for your home practise, please do get in touch

"It was an absolute delight to meet David and the team and be left alone in the wonderful studio testing out the range of organs on display.

I was particularly interested in the Consort range, and the second visit enabled me to try out a Consort D70 LX that met my desires for a three manual organ with a 32 note pedal board which I purchased and was soon delivered in the most professional manner.

It is a wonderful instrument using Physis Plus technology and an impressive range of stops - each of which can have up to seven alternative voices. The surround sound internal to the instrument gives a superb output, the reverb can be adjusted to suit so I would expect that, in a church surrounding with external speakers, this would be wonderful instrument.

Additionally there are four pipe settings - English Cathedral, Baroque, Romantic and Symphonic. I am thoroughly enjoying getting to know the instrument and its capabilities. I also got a set of Viscount headphones - a most useful addition if you do not wish to annoy the neighbours." Ian Tafano, Organist
