The sea doesnโ€™t forget.
It knows all of this has happened before.
And will happen again . . .

1840
As a vast ship loses its way in the night-time mist, shattering against the cliffs of Crescombe, North Devon, a daring young artist dives into the murky sea. But itโ€™s not for heroism he is risking it all: something - or someone - is drawing him into those dark, perilous waters . . .

Now
When Finley arrives in Crescombe for the summer, he suspects heโ€™s not alone in his attic bedroom. Before long, he is uncovering secrets the remote seaside town has kept for almost two centuries: about ghosts and curses, about a ruthless old smuggling family, and about the young women whose bodies have washed up along the townโ€™s rocky shoreline, just below his porthole window.

Yet the more Finley learns, the closer heโ€™s bonded to those who have gone before him - and the closer he comes to meeting the same watery end...

By turns chilling, compelling and deeply emotive, this sweeping historical mystery will immerse you from the very first page.

The Book Loft is delighted to present An Evening with Rafael Torrubia, a trail-blazing voice in Scottish fantasy, fusing the Celtic folklore of J.R.R. Tolkien with the climate geopolitics of N.K. Jemisin in an epic adventure of ancient gods, apocalyptic magic, and love that can survive the end of the world - unmissable for fans of The Will of the Many by James Islington, The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon, and Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson. The Shipwright and the Shroudweaver is the first book in this brand-new debut duology.

Join us at The Straw Yard on Friday July 3rd for an interview and Q&A, followed by a book signing. There might be a wee cute scruffy dog in attendance, as part of Rafaelโ€™s team.๐Ÿถ
The Straw Yard bar will be open & offering a selection of alcoholic, non-alcoholic and hot drinks.

๐ŸŽŸ๏ธTickets can be booked via The Book Loft or The Straw Yard. Links in bio.

No one remembers the calamity that killed the gods and stole the names of their people. Now Shipwright and Shroudweaver are known only by their professions.

Sheโ€™s a master of magical shipbuilding. Heโ€™s a maker of the gilded gods that fuel their sails, stitched from the souls of dead sailors.

When a chance to save their world calls the veterans back to shore, they decide theyโ€™ll stop at nothing to vanquish the ultimate evil, embarking on a deadly race against time to beat the grief-wracked sorceress known as Crowkisser to the notorious mountain kingdom in the legend-infested north before she unleashes the ancient power entombed at its heart - the one waiting to finish what it started.

Rafael is a writer of epic fantasy, poetry, history, and things in-between. They currently work part-time with the University of St. Andrews supporting postgraduate students, and also with the writing charity Open Book, delivering creative writing workshops to participants across Scotland.

See you there!๐ŸŒŠ

The deadliest truths are those in the shadows . . .

Detective Matthew Venn is called to investigate when the body of a young woman is found in the swimming pool of Tide House, a luxurious holiday home in North Devon. The girlโ€™s best friend has disappeared and the property belongs to rising political star Paul Armstrong, leading to intense media scrutiny.

As a scorching heatwave rages and further tragedy strikes, Venn and his team question a community brimming with secrets. The dead girl and her friend had been spotted at a music festival the previous day, an event which brought locals and outsiders together โ€“ some of whom may have been more connected with the Armstrongs than first thought.

Caught between a powerful familyโ€™s secrets and a powder keg of local tensions, Venn must navigate a treacherous path โ€“ knowing that the real answers lie not in what people say, but in the silence that they keep . . .

OUT TODAY: Land by Maggie Oโ€™Farrell ๐Ÿ“š

Inspired by the mapping of Ireland in the mid nineteenth century, Land, the new novel from the author of Hamnet, is at once intimate and epic: a portrait of a family navigating a legacy of upheaval and loss with love and hope.

On a windswept peninsula stretching out into the Atlantic, Tomรกs and his reluctant son, Liam, are working for the great Ordnance Survey project to map the whole of Ireland. The year is 1865, and in a country not long since ravaged and emptied by the Great Hunger, the task is not an easy one. Tomรกs, however, is determined that his maps will be a record of the disaster.

The British soldiers in charge are due to arrive any day, expecting the work to be completed, but Tomรกs is unexpectedly sent off course by an unsettling encounter in a copse. His life, and those of his family, will never be the same again. Liam is terrified by the sudden change in his taciturn father. What was it that caused such cracks to open in Tomรกs and how is Liam, aged only ten, going to finish the mapping, and get them both home?

Land is a novel about separation and reunion, tragedy and recovery, colonisation and rebellion. It is a story of buried treasure, overlapping lives, ancient woodland, persistent ghosts, a particularly loyal dog, and how, when it comes to both land and history, nothing ever goes away. As spellbinding and various as the landscape that inspired it, Land is, above all, a story of survival, for our times, and for all time.
