Is your EICR due?

How old is your electrical installation and equipments? When was the last time it's condition was checked by an electrician?

These are some of the question you should ask yourself if you're the house owner or a landlord.

The UK regulation requires that an EICR is carried on electrical installations every 5 years on rented properties and every 10 years for other private homeowners or as it may deem necessary. This is to make sure the installation and the equipments are safe for continuous use and no defects present which can lead to electric shock or fire hazards.

EICR stands for Electrical Installation Condition Report which is produced following a detailed inspection of an existing electrical installation by a qualified inspector. Following a throrough inspection and testing the inspector will record his/her findings on this report regarding the condition of the wiring, and related equipment and rate them accordingly. The report will also include recommendations and what needs fixing immediately.

We hope you found this information useful.

So if an EICR is due on your property or you're concerned about the condition of the existing installation, please give us a call to discuss and we'll be able to advice you on the next steps.

What's an EIC?

EIC stands for Electrical Installation Certificate which is a document that includes the supply characteristics, circuit details and test results of a newly installed electrical installation which will be signed (certified) by a Designer, Constructor (Installer), and an Inspector who carried out the work. The original of the certificate must be given to the person ordering the work and a copy should be held by the service provider.

In the real world it could be the same person who signs as the designer, constructor and the inspector if he/she did all the work. The document should be kept safe for future reference, and the regulation requires it is held for the lifetime of the installation.

We hope this information helps.

What are "Special locations"?

When designing and carrying out electrical installation in special locations it is critical that correct guidelines are followed as per the regulation to protect people and livestock from electric shock and fire hazards. So what are special locations?

Special locations are areas where there is an increased risk of electric shock due to the presence of water or other conductive materials, and therefore require additional protection measures. Following are some examples.

1. Locations containing a bath or a shower
2. Kitchen
3. Swimming pools, hot tubs, sauna etc.

So next time when you plan on installing a new circuit or making alterations to an existing installation in special location, remember to discuss this with your service provider and make sure the work is carried out safely as per the regulatory guidelines.

We hope this information helps.
