One of the most common things I hear is: “I always end up killing my houseplants.”
The good news is that keeping houseplants alive is usually much simpler than people think. Here are a few tips to help your plants thrive.
🌿 Use the right water
Tap water can cause problems for many houseplants over time due to the chemicals and minerals it contains.
Rainwater is the gold standard. It's natural, free, and removes the risk of exposing your plants to unwanted additives found in treated water.
If rainwater isn't an option, boil tap water for at least 15 minutes, then allow it to cool completely in an open container. This helps reduce chemicals such as chlorine before watering your plants.
🪴 Nursery pots + decorative pots = the perfect combination
In my opinion, keeping your plant in its nursery pot and placing that inside a decorative pot is the easiest and most effective setup.
Not only does it make watering simpler, but the drainage holes also allow you to keep an eye on root health and spot any issues early.
💧 Watering correctly
Water the soil thoroughly until it's evenly moist, allowing excess water to drain from the holes in the bottom of the nursery pot.
Never let your plant sit in standing water inside the decorative pot. Sitting in water is one of the fastest ways to cause overwatering, root rot, and an unhappy plant.
🌱 Don't forget to feed your plants
Just like us, plants need food to grow and thrive. A good-quality plant fertiliser will provide the nutrients they need to produce healthy roots, strong growth, and vibrant foliage.
As a general rule, feed your plants every 2–4 weeks, depending on the season and the specific needs of the plant. Most houseplants will benefit from more regular feeding during the growing season (spring and summer) and less during autumn and winter.
