Standing proudly on the edge of Belfast Lough, Carrickfergus Castle founded in 1177 by the Norman knight John de Courcy is one of the best-preserved medieval structures in Ireland, with a history that reads like an epic novel of conquests, betrayals, and survival. For over 800 years, this formidable fortress has witnessed the rise and fall of kings, the clash of armies, and, if whispers are to be believed, the lingering presence of restless spirits. Logan is sure he saw a few darting shadows and heard strange noises that made his fur stand on end!

Meet Páraic, the Jailhouse Bear! 🐻

Looks like Páraic got caught with his paw in the cookie jar one too many times and ended up in Crumlin Road Gaol! But don’t worry, he’s shown his good side and has been granted early release... to the jail’s gift shop! 🎁

Now, he’s waiting for someone kind enough to pay his bail. Swing by, make a small payment, and you can take Páraic home for good! 🕵️‍♂️🏃‍♂️

Crumlin Road Gaol in Belfast, Northern Ireland, stands as a monumental symbol of the region’s turbulent history. Opened in 1845, it operated as a prison for over 150 years before closing its doors in 1996. The Gaol witnessed significant historical events, including the incarceration of political prisoners from various conflicts, including the Irish War of Independence and The Troubles. Its architecture reflects Victorian penal principles, designed to enforce discipline and isolation. The prison was notorious for its harsh conditions. Over the decades, it housed men, women, and children in separate wings. Notably, it was the site of 17 executions, the last occurring in 1961. Executions took place in a grimly efficient manner, with prisoners being hanged within the prison’s confines. During The Troubles, Crumlin Road Gaol became a focal point for political tension, holding many members of paramilitary organisations. The prison’s history is steeped in stories of escape attempts, hunger strikes, and political protests, making it a poignant reminder of Northern Ireland’s past. Today, Crumlin Road Gaol is a museum and visitor attraction, offering guided tours that delve into its storied past. It also serves as a venue for events and educational programs.
