Who’s excited for this year’s big fashion day out? We know we are 🙋‍♀️

On September 6th we’ll be taking on the runway to show off some of our fabulous designs and we would love for you all to be there!

Ashbourne Fashion Day Out is back in just a couple of weeks and we’re very excited to be taking part again!

Also joining us on the red carpet will be the lovely Caz from The Great British Sewing Bee, which is very exciting.

Betty’s will be in the second fashion show, alongside lots of our friends from the other independent shops in Ashbourne. We’ve all been busy sewing and putting together some suitably funky outfits.
It was brilliant fun last year and I know it will be again, so do come along, support us and give us a cheer!

What a gloriously colourful day we had at Betty’s with our visiting artist, exploring the rather magical world of alcohol inks.

The inks flow, blend and wander about with minds of their own, before being transformed into the most beautiful floral pictures. No two pieces could ever be exactly alike, which is part of the fun.

There was plenty of experimenting, lots of gorgeous colour and, naturally, a proper Betty’s helping of tea and cake.

Thank you to everyone who came along and created such beautiful work. Would you fancy having a go at alcohol ink art? 💐🎨

Julie from the tearoom was having a clear-out… and we couldn’t resist rescuing some of her beautiful vintage embroidered tablecloths 💐

I’ll admit, I always have a little wobble about cutting into vintage embroidery… ✂️

But there isn’t much call for embroidered tablecloths in today’s minimalist world

So we’re giving this one a new life as a rather gorgeous piece of wearable art! 🌸

Still a work in progress… but you might just spot the finished creation on the catwalk at Ashbourne Fashion Day! 👀

Hannah took it a step further and made another tablecloth top 🧵🎽

Betty’s Fashion Day Out! 🖤

We’re very proud to be part of the fabulous Ashbourne Fashion Day Out, alongside some of Ashbourne’s finest fashionistas!

I’ve been sewing all weekend to make my dress… hint: there’s quite a lot of lace involved! 👀

The Betty’s girls will be appearing in the second fashion show, and we’d absolutely love our lovely Betty’s community to come along, grab a front-row seat and cheer us on!

What a lovely day at the Ashbourne Show! It was such fun judging all the clever and beautifully made entries, especially the charity-shop upcycling class. My personal favourite had to be the fabulous pyjamas made from a £2 duvet cover. Now that is proper upcycling!

Thank you to everyone who entered and to the Ashbourne Show for another brilliant day. I even bought myself a leopard-print hat and felt extremely county! 🐆🎩

Did you watch The Great British Sewing Bee this week? 🧵

We were rather excited to see appliqué and free machine embroidery taking centre stage in one of the challenges, because this is something we absolutely LOVE doing at Betty’s and have been teaching for years.

It’s such a brilliant way of using your sewing machine almost like a pencil. Layer up pieces of fabric with appliqué, then add outlines, scribbly stitching, texture and detail with free machine embroidery. And as the Sewing Bee creations showed, it certainly doesn’t have to be neat, traditional or terribly serious!

We’ve got three lovely ways to try it coming up at Betty’s.

🧵 Introduction to Free Machine Embroidery – perfect if you’ve never tried it before and want to learn the basics.

🦒 Kath Perry’s Giraffe Panel - Kath is the queen of this technique, combining appliqué, satin stitch and free machine embroidery to create her wonderful textile pictures.

💌 Free Machine Embroidered Cards with Kath - a lovely smaller project and another chance to play with fabric, thread and drawing with your sewing machine.

It’s one of those techniques that looks difficult but is actually enormous fun once you stop worrying about being perfect.
