Nalbinding - have you heard about it?

An ancient woollen craft, created long before knitting or crochet were invented, Nalbinding was commonly used in many places in the world including Egypt and Viking lands. The oldest example found dates to 6,500bc in the Judean desert.

I am delighted to tell you that there is going to be a Nalbinding workshop in Woolly Woolly on Saturday 26th September, 1.00-4.00pm, cost £38.00, led by Tracey from Craft sum More😊

We will be using wool and a simple needle to create a soap sock or small pouch, using Oslo stitch. All materials provided, and light refreshments.

Workshops must be booked and paid for in advance👍.

The next shop that I’d like to showcase in my little series is The Yard - Alford.

I feel that we are so lucky to have this hardware shop, selling everything from snow shovels to garden twine, paint mixing to dog toys, and nails to socks.

Liz and James always offer help with a smile - and I must have tested this to the limit this year when I’ve been redecorating my home. They’ve mixed one tin of paint after another for me, advised on specialist paint and rollers, and provided such great customer service.

The kits from have arrived! 🥳

Some of you know that I’ve been knitting up samples of these fun taxidermy heads, aren’t they brilliant! They come in two sizes, Giant and Mini.

The Giant Tup’s head is roughly 38cm x 34cm x 50cm, while the same head in the Mini is 20cm x 14cm x 25cm.

Everything is provided in the kit from except the needles, and the patterns are really well written and easy to follow, a pleasure to knit. They come packed in great little duffel bags too.
I am so pleased that I can stock these kits! 😊

I’ve just had a restock from Iolair Yarn - and it’s gorgeous!
It’s been very hard to put this stunning yarn out on the shelves, I want to keep it all. Pure luxury in a skein.

All this - plus it’s so versatile and lovely to handle, whether you knit, crochet, felt or spin.
I think we have the best wool in the world (other countries may have other views🤣) but where else have you so many native breeds with such different textures, characteristics, and wool handling?

If you are involved in apparel design, product development, or sustainable textiles, there is one technical property of wool that makes it an absolute superpower: it is hygroscopic.

While synthetic fibres are repelling water but trapping vapour against the skin, wool fibres actively interact with the local micro-climate. Wool can absorb up to 35% of its dry weight in moisture vapour without feeling damp or losing its thermal insulation properties.

Why this matters for product performance:

✅ Dynamic Thermoregulation: By absorbing and releasing moisture, wool helps maintain a stable body temperature in both high-exertion and extreme-cold environments.
✅ Microbiome & Odour Control: Because wool efficiently manages vapour before it condenses into liquid sweat, it significantly inhibits the growth of odour-causing bacteria.
✅ Circular Economy: You get a high-performance fibre that is 100% biodegradable and renewable, reducing reliance on petrochemical synthetics.

In an industry heavily focused on synthetic performance modifications, natural wool remains the gold standard for breathability and comfort.
